The land was barren, the sky grey and misty. The wind was icy, a stinging cold that seemed to drain all warmth from your body as it passed. There were no trees or fields. There was nothing. Just the bleak desolation of endless ice and snow.

Except that, at night, fire danced on the horizon. It was a pale thing, the light of the flames just visible through the drifting snow. But it kept them warm, as they huddled by their campfire, surrounded by packs, weapons, and supplies – the trappings of life in a frozen world. And, as Skadi had said, there would be no easy return from this place. It wasn't that she expected trouble, but the dangers were there for all to see.
She would not fail. She would find the staff and bring it back. And then…

Then what? What would she do? Return? There was no home to return to. No family waiting. Noone to serve. She'd never really thought about what she would do after she found the staff. It was another thing for the future. A problem that might not even arise.

But now…

Now it hung over her like an icy sword.

Because now she knew.

Skadi could sense it, almost like a cold, wet touch on the skin. It was a presence, a presence that lingered in the air, almost invisible, yet powerful and ever-present.

It was full of magic.

And magic was power.
