"War is catastrophe. It breaks families in irretrievable pieces. But those who are gone are not necessarily lost." -Salt to the Sea Wilhelm Gustloff, named for her cruel yet high-ranking father who'd just been killed in battle, was born into a clan on the cusp of war. Political upheavals threatened to divide the clan's neighbors, and Gustloff's clan was encroaching on their territories, using their instability against them. The war formally began a few years later, and Gustloff grew up in a world shaped by the conflict. She trained as a medic from a young age, but things took a turn for the worse as the opposing clans' stronger allies began to close in. Gustloff, along with several of her fellow medics, went against orders and began to help evacuate civilians by boat, bringing them to neutral clans far away down the coast so as to protect them from the war that was suddenly so close to home. During these missions, she began to realize her own clan had been in the wrong from the very beginning. Torn between her home and her morals, Gustloff began to break down. She lived in a state of denial for quite some time, unwilling to believe what she'd heard, and then finally she decided to simply run away so she wouldn't have to deal with her own inner turmoil anymore. She sought shelter in a different part of the Sunbeam Ruins, living in one of the neutral clans she'd brought refugees to, and meanwhile her clan lost the war. She still didn't return, though, unwilling to confront the lies she'd been raised on, and she stayed in her adopted clan for a few more years before moving again, no longer wanting to even associate with the former refugees as they forced her to think too much about her old life. She ended up in the Lanternlight Clan, where she now works as Kariyan’s understudy in the hospital, and although she's still reluctant to confront her past she's at least able to look forward to the future.

» Based on the MV Wilhelm Gustloff, a German cruise ship, hospital ship, and finally armed transport ship built in 1938 and sunk by a Soviet submarine in 1945 while transporting refugees who were fleeing from the advancing Red Army » The sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff was one of the worst maritime disasters in history, if not the worst; as with my other shipwreck-based fandragons, this dragon is intended to represent the ship herself, not the tragedy of her sinking.
