Marsh is a cold-hearted researcher. He works slowly and methodically, but when he presents something to the public, he's usually right. He despises Cope for getting in his way, barging ahead, and revealing things before they're fully researched. He'll do almost anything to claim a digsite before Cope hears about it--and sometimes he'll bribe Cope's own workers to sell stuff to him instead of reporting to their boss.
