Biography

i need to redo this lore shhhh

pollux constantly seems on edge. he is protective of dirtmouth, and defends the remaining residents from the horrors that roam the desert. he is old, older than the town and older still, but he seems to age much slower than others.

many rumours have been told about him, and he neither confirms nor denies them, seeming to enjoy the outlandish ideas. some say he was cursed to be the immortal defender of the desert dwellers, some say that he himself is a monster, and some even believe that he's a god.

even though he's not known to be the kindest, he deeply cares for his children and grandchildren. he loves to tell stories of his past adventures to his them, and they gather around him and listen for hours.

his wife passed years ago, from the deadly sickness that swept the town and caused so many to leave. she was his everything, and her death tore him to pieces.

"the sands and the silence will swallow you up, child," pollux says, lighting his pipe. "if the beasts don't first."

"i want to cross the desert," you say. the rumors of desert creatures never phased you. they were just rumors, after all.

"why?" pollux asks, looking into your eyes. he takes a drag on his pipe. "what could be so important?"

"i want to prove that anyone can do it, not just you. i don't believe that there are beasts, i think you made them up to scare dragons away from the desert."

pollux doesn't flinch. "a lot of dragons have said that," he says with a raspy laugh, "and they were all wrong. i'll take you to the edge of the desert, if you really want. but don't expect to make it," he says, blowing a smoke ring.

you nod. "take me there."

pollux stands and stretches his wings. they're heavily scarred, but his right wing is torn. you wince as you imagine what could've done that. a bad fall, perhaps? he's much taller than you thought, abnormally tall for a skydancer.

yes, he looks like he's seen a few battles, but you're certain the scars are from simple hunting accidents or bar fights.

he sighs and picks up the bag that had been sitting beside him. "i have water and some food in here, enough to last you two weeks if you're careful. if you make it back, return it, but i'm not expecting that."

you take the worn canvas bag and look inside. there are several cloth-wrapped lumps you assume contain food and a couple of canteens. yes, this should last you til the end of your trip.

"thank you," you say.

pollux laughs. "it's no problem. i always keep it packed in case i need to go right away. i do hope you make it, you know. you're a fool, but you're young, and foolishness is to be expected. now get whatever you're bringing together and meet me in front of the tavern."

- ☼ -

"how long does it take to cross?" you ask pollux as he leads you through town.

"oh, about two or three weeks on foot. if you fly, it takes around one week, but i don't recommend that. that's how i tore my wing. i can't fly anymore," he says, with a wistful look at the sky.

a skydancer unable to fly? he must be devastated, you think, but you don't say anything. he doesn't seem like he wants to talk about it.

as you reach the edge of town, you can see distant sand dunes. the desert is a lot bigger than you thought, and dirtmouth is just on the edge. it looks empty, though, aside from the cacti and brush.

"best of luck," pollux says. "are you sure you don't want to turn around?"

you grip your bags tighter. "i am. thank you again for the supplies."

he nods. "good luck. i hope i see you again, kid."

you smile. "i'll give you your bag when i come back."

"i hope so," he says, and begins to walk away.

you turn back to the desert and take a deep breath. the sun is oppressive, and you're glad for your hat. the sand crunches beneath your feet, but that's the only sound you hear other than the wind. you're safe.

- ☼ -

that night, you wake abruptly, like you'd just had a nightmare. you can't remember your dream— something about your family, maybe? whatever it was, it doesn't matter. you just want to sleep.

just as your eyes begin to close, you hear a noise in the distance.

a roar.

it's an indescribable sound, but surely it's just a coyote or some other desert animal. you step out of your tent to look.

that was a mistake.

and pollux will never get his bag back.
