The Glacial Keep
Ongoing Lore :: Starting Point :: Next Entry

The orange and blue skydancer peers up at Twig. “Do you need help with anything?”

Twig bows his head in a nod. “If you could show our visitor around, I need to get back to my office. They need extra clothes, rations, and a place to sleep for the night. Keep an eye on them and make sure they don’t wander off anywhere they aren’t supposed to be.”

“Of course,” Andesite replies stiffly. “I’ll report to you immediately if there’s a problem.”

Twig grumbles a stern ‘thank you’ and turns his tail to walk towards one of the branching ice tunnels. You watch as his large form disappears behind the ice, then glance back at your new guide. He’s a much less intimidating figure than the imperial or the mirrors from before. His build is lean and graceful, much like the majority of skydancers you come across. He’s wearing what looks to be an expensive cloak— deep blue and dotted with stars and runes. His blue eyes, indicative of water flight ancestry, match the blue of his scales and garments. He brushes his feathered tail over your back legs in a gesture to follow him as he begins to make his way towards a tunnel. “Come along,” he says, still bearing a kind, subtle smile. “You look dreadfully cold.”

The words seem to cause you to shiver even more. Even though the temperature is less intense inside, the lingering damage of traveling through the cold for miles persists. “Yes,” you chatter. “Thank you for being k-kind enough to give me somewhere to stay…I don’t know if I’d have survived the night.”

“The Icefields are impossibly dangerous to those who aren’t adapted to the temperature,” the skydancer concedes. “When I was a young dragon, I remember the first few months I spent here being quite the contrast to my previous home.”

“Why did you move?”

The skydancer shrugs. “It may be a harsh place to live, but we have important jobs. Simply put, I found my calling in this clan."

As the two of you chat, explaining your reasoning for being here, you dip into a tunnel that leads you to another large room filled to the brim with every food item you’ve ever known. Your eyes widen. How did they find all of this stuff? There were stacks of crates, filled with greens and other vegetables, not any you’d recognized in the barren landscape of the Southern Icefield. Butchered meat and carcasses were set aside, chilled by the ice all around them. Bundles of herbs hang from the ceiling, and fish baskets are piled on top of each other in one corner. An immense heap lays in the middle of the room, varying shades of brown and green. At first glance, this seems to be a pile of vegetables and fungi until you recognize the figure of a sleeping guardian. He’s curled in the middle of the pile of imported crops, with a few half-full crates surrounding him. The bunches of fungi seem to be growing from his scales, further camouflaging him with the pile. Judging by the turnip clutched in his claws, you assume he was in the middle of something when he dozed off.

The sound of your footsteps and a quiet giggle Andesite tries to stifle causes the sleeping mass to stir. He blinks drowsily once before his head shoots up violently. His eyes dart around the room, and his snout is already curled in a snarl before he takes the time to recognize who has entered. “Hungry, I swear to the—” His sentence is interrupted by a dawning realization as his gaze falls upon you and Andesite. As fast as he tensed, his shoulders and neck slump, muscles visibly relaxing. “Oh.”

“Dear gods,” Andesite laughs, weaving through the collection of food to edge closer to the guardian. “Has Hungry been giving you trouble again, Scatter?” he teases lightly.

The guardian grunts as he stands up, stretching his half-asleep body. He brushes a leaf off of his shoulder. “He’s tried to sneak in seven times today to steal food,” he grumbles, scraping at the ground. “It wouldn’t be a problem if he just asked, I swear.”

Andesite traces his tail over Scatter’s back. “I’m sorry, hun. I know how important your hoard is to you.”

The guardian rolls his eyes, looking at the ceiling with an exasperated huff. “I have to organize all of this every day. I have to ration out every hunted rabbit and foraged berry, and I can’t have dragons walking in and taking whatever they want, whenever they want. This is my charge.” As he rants, he begins to aggressively organize the loose crops he has into the crates. “The worst part is, he’s fast, Andy. As soon as he scurries off with something, I can’t do anything to stop him.”

Andesite gives quiet nods and ‘mhms’ as Scatter speaks, gently brushing against him. “I’ll try to talk some sense into him later, alright?”

“Yeah…” The guardian gives a low sigh, leaning into Andesite’s touch. His gaze flits over to you. “Who is this?”

“A lost traveler,” Andesite says. “We were hoping to get a meal if that isn’t too large of an ask.”

“Hi.” You give a shy greeting. You don’t want to upset the guardian anymore than he already is, but you’re starving. He narrows his eyes at you, pausing for a moment before starting to collect food from around the room. Despite his size, he weaves through the crates and piles seamlessly, not even budging one thing out of its place. Andesite tilts his head towards you and speaks in a low voice “Apologies, Scatter can be grumpy when he wakes up, but he’s really just a big sweetheart.”

“I heard that,” Scatter mutters from the far end of the room.

Andesite puts a hand over his mouth, stifling a small chuckle. “I’m not wrong.”

With a glint of amusement in his eye, Scatter arrives to give you a small bundle, delicately dropping it in your grasp. “I’m sorry if I seem rude,” he apologizes. “I’ve had a rough day concerning another member of our clan. Please…enjoy.”

“Thank you.” You give a gracious dip of your head. “It’s no problem.”

Scatter grumbles a reply and begins to head back to his pile of food. On his way, Andesite interrupts him, nuzzling affectionately against Scatter’s chin. The guardian pauses at the touch, returning the gesture and enveloping Andesite with one of his wings. “Thank you,” Andesite says, grooming Scatter’s beard, picking out an edible flower that had gotten lost inside. “Please, get some more rest. I’ll watch over your hoard tonight if it gives you some time to relax, okay?”

“Okay,” Scatter concedes, pulling away from Andesite. “See you later tonight?”

“Mhm.”
