History
Sornieth is a harsh place to live. The raw nature of the environment, coupled with the beastclans and the dragons that dominate them, only adds to the hostility of the land. The Snowsquall Tundra is a tough place for dragonkind and their lesser counterparts. Regardless, dragons still inhabit the caves and nests that are spread out within the heart of the Southern Icefield. Among one of the few hidden dens, a first time mother Guardian nestled her four freshly fertilized ice eggs. She was grey in color with beautiful ivory wings, and her piercing ice eyes were a sight to behold. For the next few days she would spend time incubating the eggs, watching as they formed their icy exterior and preparing to take care of the inevitable bundle of hatchlings.

Though the den site was fairly safe, especially with the massive Guardian protecting it, the surrounding environment was anything but. Nearby, a pack of winter wolves hunted. They could detect the scent of freshly laid eggs and, having not eaten in a week, they were hungry...and desperate. The mother Guardian was unaware that her eggs were being sniffed out. She stood up and stretched, then began to wrap her body around the eggs once more. But she froze when she heard the howls. Having spent her whole life in the Southern Icefield, she knew these particular howls meant the wolves were on the trail of prey. She quickly threw nesting material over the eggs to continue incubation while she went out of the den on the defense. These wolves were too close for comfort and she would be ready to meet them if they dared to take her on for her eggs.

The winter wolves were already closing in and forming a strategy. One of them, a very thin and clearly diseased wolf, was the first to be spotted by the mother Guardian. He stood atop a hill and spotted the mother, then began sizing her up. Behind him, and out of sight of the mother, the pack began to move, spreading out and circling around the den while remaining unseen. The mangy wolf bobbed his head up and down, and howled a false "call" to the pack. At this point, with the wind against her, the mother did not know the other wolves were near. She spread her wings and let out a threatening snarl to the wolf, but he was undeterred. The decoy wolf began to climb down the hill, enticing her to chase. She bounded off in a four legged sprint, false charging the mangy wolf who turned tail and ran. He flopped over the hill as quickly as he could and when she got close, the scent of the other wolves hit her like a freight train. Panicked, she whipped around and saw the pack at the entrance to her den. How foolish she was!

In terror, she bolted towards the den, taking flight for speed. The wolves had already made it to the eggs though, and without their ice exterior having formed, they were the perfect size to be picked up by the jaws of the wolves. All four eggs were grabbed and the wolves ran off. The mother Guardian gave chase. Her heart was beating so fast and she was terrified to lose the eggs so soon. Quickly, she lunged at a wolf that carried one of the eggs. She used her hind feet to grab the beast and the egg fell from its mouth, falling to the snow but not breaking. She flung the wolf far away and into a tree, the yelp it released echoing into the woods. Quickly, she picked up the egg and went after the other wolves.

At this point, the wolves were so spread out she didn't know which ones had her eggs and which didn't. One wolf with an egg in his jaws was already far enough, and he had come to a trot, making his way back to his own den. His jaws salivated as he thought of devouring the egg, and as he paused to look around, his clumsy jaws dropped the egg. It fell onto the snow and then began to roll down the cliff side on which he stood. The wolf tried to snatch it up but it was rolling too quickly away and eventually fell into a tiny crevice along the cliff. The wolf cautiously climbed down and tried to pry the egg from the cliff side. Not being able to reach it, he began to dig around it furiously, frustrated that his meal had become trapped. He spent a good minute digging around the egg but the surface of the cliff was too strong for his paws to break through. Mid-dig, his ears perked up when the sound of a roaring dragon came near. He recognized it immediately as the mother Guardian. Scared, the wolf turned tail, spotting the mother guardian far off tearing into one of his pack mates. He thought for sure she would come and find the egg, and not wanting to risk injury, he fled.

Time passed for the little egg and the mother Guardian was long out of the area, never to find the egg again. Ice eventually formed around the egg and prevented it from dying, but without incubation, the egg sat for months, unable to be hatched.

Many more months later, a terrible storm had come and passed. A longneck wanderer was exploring the area, gathering materials to rebuild his destroyed home. There was a tree that had fallen over the crevice and split apart, perfect for the longneck to take and turn into shingles for his home. He moved to the tree and began to gather the nicer pieces. With the sunlight shining, a twinkle shined just behind the tree and caught the longneck's attention. He shoved aside pieces of the tree and discovered a gleaming dragon ice egg. He instantly felt a sensation of fear. Surely the mother must be around. But curiosity and greed got the better of him, and he quickly reached into the cliff and pulled the ice egg out with his nimble hands. It would be worth a good amount in the trading market, and if anything else, it would be a good meal if he needed it. The egg was stuffed into his satchel and he ran from the area as fast as his little legs could take him.

Later that day another storm hit. The longneck was nowhere near where he wanted to be, and his fear of the dragon mother finding him was strong. "This storm is a punishment," he cried out to himself, "I should have never taken this egg! First the rasa and now this egg. I've no luck with other beings!" In fear, the longneck took the egg from the satchel and threw it as far away from him as he could, then sped off to find shelter. The egg landed in plain sight of any passing creature, but with the storm going strong, it would be alone yet again.

When night had hit, the storm was slowing but the area was frozen over. A massive Snapper, having just endured the storm, was shuffling through the snow when he came across the ice egg. With only slight hesitation, the Snapper took the egg and decided to incubate it...

~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~

It was a rare, sunny and beautiful day in the Snowsquall Tundra. The hour of hatching was upon the Snapper. He had spent days completing the incubation cycle for the Guardian egg, and any moment now it would hatch. The ice that had formed around the egg for protection began to shatter, signs that the little dragon was trying to break free. The Snapper watched, curious as to what the little Guardian would look like. After 30 minutes or so, the Guardian finally broke free. The hatchling opened his gorgeous ice eyes wide, and stretched his tiny beige wings for the first time. While his eyes adjusted to the light, he quickly crawled towards the warmth of the Snapper. Before the Guardian could cuddle up to him, the Snapper lifted him up and they were face to face with each other. "My name is Steel," the Snapper said, his voice deep, husky and ominous, "And you, you don't have a name. You won't need one, slaves never need one."

Present Day
While Steel never really gave him a name, Grimrock ended up getting his name from the other slaves in his company. They liked to say that his presence was grim, and since he came from a "rock of ice," it just seemed fitting. After Grimrock and Steel settled into a clan, Grimrock was tasked with helping out the clan to help cement their place. In Clan Mara, there is a lot of Snappers. It seems that the only different breeds to ever enter the territory are slaves of Steel's. The clan matriarch is strict about only allowing Snappers in, but this confuses Grimrock since even the matriarch's daughter is a different breed: a Guardian just like him. But he wouldn't dare question the matriarch's strange rules.

Now Grimrock spends his days catering to all the Snappers in the clan, and they are all very needy. The life of a slave is all but pleasant, but Grimrock seems to deal with it because Steel is never as mean to him as he is to the other slaves. There isn't much anyone knows about Grimrock, but no one cares to know about him except for Aella the Guardian, and her time with him is always limited. When he does speak, he always says what is on his mind, and that either makes sense or it doesn't. With all the "freedom" Grimrock gets in the clan, it is a true mystery why he always returns. He won't fully open up to Aella about it either, and the reason seems to be the only secret he truly holds, despite his inability to keep secret anything else. Whatever the reason may be, Grimrock continues to live his life under the tight grasp of Steel and may do so for the rest of his years on the harsh world that is Sornieth.
