azula is my favorite villain of all time, like. honestly. villains r so hard to choose from, because i find in SOME WAY I RELATE OR SYMPATHIZE....and she's genuinely- a kid used as a weapon and god!!! that stuck with me!!!
i have this funky au in my head where azula is sent to an island, unnamed, not even gonna pretend to know what i'm thinking haha- and she's supposed to like "get better" or whatever. but how do you live your life with the purpose of healing, when all you've been raised to do is destroy, kill. ty lee, despite trying, can't forget her!!! because how do you even do that? forget your childhood best friend who was like, a five times over war criminal at the age of fifteen and committed literal genocide On Purpose, and also tried to kill you On Purpose? she goes on the search for azula, discovers some things about herself on the way (find those in on ty lee dragon teheh) and when she finds her. ty lee is confronted with the devastating reality that azula is a husk. she's not... functional. she's a shell of the fiery teenager she once knew, she's a mid twenty something stranger with no drive to be... better, or get better.
(i guess for the sake of like. extra angst, azula's had her firebending stripped away, in consequence of her murdering people frfr) ty lee wasn't present for azula's punishments, but she's witness to the outcome. she hates it!!! so much!!! she really does, she was part of the fire nation's quest to conquer everyone, too, and she was barely reprimanded because they were kids, and what kid knows better? she switched sides, and that somehow absolved her of her sins- that wasn't right, she knew then and she knows now. she's grateful for her privilege, though, because she's here; on a deserted island with her would-be killer, her best friend.
azula is sooooo skeptical of ty lee showing up out of nowhere and saying omg im gonna help you owo!!! because what? why? literally. lol no. her hope for redemption fizzled out on some odd night years ago, why should it flicker back to life, why would it? it hurts to perceive the future where her "hope" bears fruit, so she chooses not to, and instead fights ty lee allllll the way. she isn't going to yield. she thinks. she's going to be as sharp-witted and thorny as she was when she was younger.
she can't keep up, though. she's weak, powerless- and ty lee is radiant, burning, her ardent attempts at comforting her and healing her are tearing at her walls and they're crumbling, yet... not? ty lee respects her space, in her humble, dusty cottage. ty lee doesn't enter her dorm, she leaves her alone after at certain times in the day, lingering... sometimes! not a lot... it's okay, azula decides because she lingers, too. on long, hot afternoons, she lingers on the beach, with ty lee by her side. she wants to believe she's not getting better, but for the first time in ten years? she smiles, and it's genuine. it's the same soft smile she gave ty lee when they reunited so long ago.
so ty lee lingers more, and more, she cooks her dinner, makes her tea, and at some point takes up space in the room down the hall from azula instead of sleeping in a tent behind their cottage. it's a weird dynamic, azula's used to solitary confinement; occasional visits from The Avatar and a nanny that lives in the village on the other side of the island... both of which are few and far between. enough to deliver food and brief, brief conversation, and then gone. ty lee stays up with her on frequent sleepless nights and practically drowns in her conversation. she asks about biology and teaches her about botany, things azula forgot she knew and forgot what she was interested in. she sees her reflection in a cup of tea one night, her eyes are shiny from freshly shed tears and she's wearing a smile that stretches from ear to ear.
when she looks back up, ty lee is mirroring her, sitting in the chair beside her, separated only by a small end table. she reaches out her hand, and azula takes it. she squeezes once, and doesn't let go. neither does ty lee.

ehhejhFHJHJASF anyways. they get closer and closer and sorry's are exchanged. azula never gets her bending back but she returns to the firenation, marries ty lee after homophobia is outlawed and has a son named lu ten. :DDDD no, azula is never forgiven entirely in this au. i believe she did unspeakable things. !!!!!!! so . she isn't forgiven, but she's at peace.
