MARTIN BLACKWOOD

Not much is known about Martin by the clan, as he seems very hesitant to say where he came from. All that is known is that, when he woke up after having his wounds treated, he seemed surprised when he saw himself in the mirror, almost like he was shocked to see he was a dragon. But that's ridiculous - he's always been a dragon. Right?

He was found alongside Jon at the Forbidden Portal, and seems to refer to this place as "Somewhere Else," though no one is quite sure what that means.

(squeak, movement) What was I saying?

Ah – S, Sorry – (sorry exhale) It’s just this chair-

[SQUEAK AND MOVEMENT SOUNDS AS HE GETS UP.]

MARTIN
– it’s so hard to concentrate when you’re uncomfortable, isn’t it?

[HE SIGHS.]

[A FEW MORE CREAKS.]

[THE STATIC RISES.]

MARTIN
Now, I think – Hey, hang on. Where did you come from?

Tape recorder. (heh) What, you want me to give you a statement, I –

[THE STATIC PRESSES.]

MARTIN
(deadened voice) Why. The Eye has won. It can already see everything; it wouldn’t need a – w-wouldn’t need a –

[THE STATIC FADES.]

MARTIN
(stuttering, stumbling) Well it’s just, nice to talk to someone, I guess. No one real ever really listens to me anyway.

Oh, they nod and respond and say ‘No, Martin,’ or ‘Not now, Martin,’ or ‘Leave it, Martin –’ but, funny thing is – (false bright) I didn’t ask them to do anything!

Just wanted to see if they needed a hand. (heh, but humorless) Is that me? (unsure) Is – Is that me? Martin? Martin. Maartin. (close to Jon’s pronunciation) Martin.

Doesn’t sound right. But who else would I be? (hm) Whoever owns this house, I guess. It certainly doesn’t seem like the kind of place that somebody called Maartin would live.

Martin.

It feels like a small name. One that wants to be warm and happy. Not like here.

[CREAK.]

MARTIN
You know, I’ve wandered around all these rooms, and – they all just make me feel alone.

They scare me.

Even when I find someone else, I feel alone.

(agitated) Why am I here?

I-I fell behind. I was – I was too slow, and, and, and the fog caught up; I was following. Al-Always following, never leading. Never leading.

Why did he leave me behind? D-Did he? Who are – Wh– Who are you? Who am –? (realization, movement) J-J-Jon.

[THE STATIC KICKS IN AGAIN.]

MARTIN
Jon, Jon. Yes. Jon, I remember him. (shaky exhale) I need to, I need to keep him here. If he can find me, I – he, he knows enough; surely he Knows enough to find me, but I can’t – (struggling) If I forget him, if, if I forget – me – maybe – maybe there’s nothing left to Know. No one to find.

[CREAKING MOVEMENT.]

MARTIN
Talking helps. I got you all here to listen; (tap) Just, just don’t stop talking.

You – You are Martin Blackwood. Yes. You, you didn’t choose to be here. Jon is coming. (stronger) I am Martin Blackwood, and I am not lonely anymore; I am not lonely anymore. (voice shaking with effort) I want to have friends; I – no, I have friends. I-I’m in love. (heh) I am in love, and I will not forget that; I will not forget. (stronger) I am Martin Black–

ARCHIVIST
(far off, calling) Martin!

MARTIN
Wai– wh– Jon?

ARCHIVIST
(getting closer) Martin! Martin?

MARTIN
Jon! Jon, over here!

[AND THE STATIC IS GROWING LOUDER.]

ARCHIVIST
Oh! Martin, hold on, I, I, I’m coming; I just –

[FOOTSTEPS.]

ARCHIVIST (ON MIC)
(relieved) Oh, Martin; thank god, I – I was –

I, I thought you were behind me.

[MARTIN LETS OUT A SOFT OH.]

MARTIN
I thought you’d left me behind. Gone on without me.

Orange color genes, Speckle gene, Gold Glasses, Wondrous Sweater - A reference to the fact that Martin is typically drawn with and described as having ginger hair, freckles, glasses with round frames, and wearing sweaters in fan works.
Guardian breed - A reference to MAG022 - Colony, where Martin is making a statement on his encounter with Jane Prentiss. In it, Martin describes how, while trying to secure proof for his skeptical boss, Jon, that the Carlos Vittery statement he wrote off as perfectly normal was not normal, he broke into the basement of the building Prentiss was in (not knowing she was there) by entering via a window, and describes it as, "Quite a tight squeeze for me, I mean, I’m not exactly the smallest guy in the world." This, along with Jonny Sims (writer/Jon's VA) and Alex J. Newall's (director/Martin's VA) interpretations for him imply that he is very large in stature.
Sussex Spaniel - A reference to the liveshow, which spans over the first three episodes of the show with additional dialogue and details between and before. In the liveshow, shortly after the events of MAG001 - Anglerfish take place, Jon meets his new assistant, Martin, for the first time when he walks into Jon's office (unaware that the man he's talking to is Jon, his new boss) and asks if he's seen a dog. The dog is described as being a spaniel, and Martin claims that he was outside with the dog, making friends with it, before he accidentally let it inside. Later in the liveshow, Tim comes in to ask if Jon knows about the dog, and reports that the dog has made a "mess of the doggy variety."
Meadow Tea set - A reference to Martin's tea-making habits.
Mist Chime - A reference to Martin submitting to and falling victim to the Lonely, one of the fifteen Powers and the fear of loneliness, isolation, and being forgotten. The Lonely often manifests as fog, and domains aligned with the Lonely are often cold and choked thick with fog. Lonely domains rob the person taken of their memories, making them forget things they care about, who they are, where they are, and what they were talking about, with the only way to fend it off being to cling desperately to the memory of someone or something you love.
Love's Herald - A reference to Martin's relationship with Jon. Related to the Mist Chime above, Jon is the person Martin clung to, both physically and the memory of, to escape the Lonely. Likewise, Jon is the person Jon clung to to retain what humanity he has left.
Afternoon Tea - A reference to the season 5 trailer, in which Martin brings Jon a cup of tea in an attempt to comfort him. After Jon responds, "No, you didn't," to Martin saying he brought tea, Martin then learns that the 'tea' he'd made was not, in fact, tea, and he drops it in fear after it hisses at him. Jon explains that 'this place' – their cottage in the apocalypse – won't allow them any comfort, not even something as small as tea. Also a reference to the fact that he dislikes oolong tea, as it reminds him of his mother.
Veteran's Leg and Eye Scars - A reference to the hardships endured during the apocalypse, with the face scar in particular being a reference to the piece of falling rubble that struck Martin as the Panopticon crumbled in MAG200 - Last Words. I interpret it as having struck him in the head.
