Researching the Beyond
  • Qieren grew up just as many hatchlings did in the land of the arcanist, with a thirst for knowledge and a want to see and study everything she could
  • Where most hatchlings wished to study these rocks, or those plants, or how to break normal things down to their most basic form, Qieren was obsessed with the stars and what lay beyond their planet
  • She had grown up hearing stories of great beings, gods unlike their own, fey, creatures who were just as great and powerful yet could not be considered gods for they were far too ancient
  • It was the story of the being that made up the stars that caught her interest, the idea that there was something so large and vast, unimaginably old and powerful, just out of reach
  • She spent every day she could studying the stars, how they shifted and changed, how the colors bled into each other, the constellations; any and everything she could to find the answers to questions she didn't know
  • It was not until she was much older, her mother long past and forgotten, that she finally began to make real strides in her studies
  • She began finding mention in ancient books of rituals, ways to allow those ancient beings to touch their world, and she could not help but wonder if there was a way to harness their power more directly
  • The books mentioned pulling gods into their world, allowing them to reach them as they once had, yet it was theoretical practices at best and deadly at worst
  • One of her first tests of the knowledge held within those old books was to capture a star, for there were many minor gods of such things, and thus her search for a test subject landed her on a star named Solani
  • It did not take long for her to reach out to the minor god, for she had created a rift between the worlds so she might pull the star closer, and while it was not difficult to convince the star to make her escape, the actual process of freeing was a different matter for there was a more powerful force holding her back
  • Eventually she succeeded, watching a star fall from the sky, though she never did manage to find where the star had ended up.
  • After her success with the star, she began working towards her true goal, knowing that the magic was at least possible
  • Qieren began working on a new project, one that would allow her to capture the being made of stars. She was unsure if she wished to study them further or use their power for greater things, but her focus had to first be on concentrating that old power into a vessel
  • It took even long yet to find something suitable to contain something greater than any god, a young dragon who had been fascinated with the stars just as she had
  • There was little convincing necessary to get him to agree, for he had always wished to see the stars more closely, and so she put even more time and resources into her work
  • It was a little over a year before it was finally time to test her theories, one great leap and she would have captured her god, for that is what the stars had become
  • The results were different than she had initially expected, for the concentrated force nearly killed her on its own, and then came the wrath of a being she did not know and the knowledge that she had made an enemy more powerful than she could have imagined
  • There was no real way to contain them, though she had weakened them with the projected, enough so that she escaped with her life, even if her eyes had not been quite as lucky
  • She knew there would be no real way to contain for control them either, not once they learned how to function in their vessel, and so she finally admitted defeat, taking her greatest achievement to the southern icefields so they might be contained
  • She couldn't say if that great, terrible being was still in those prisons, but perhaps she had at least bought herself a bit of time
