Anyone Can Drown

Hadir is a strong swimmer, sometimes spending days at a time completely submerged. Once upon a time, he could have been found with his brother, Hamal, sneaking around the lair and causing havoc, like so many hatchlings before them.

While Hadir's quick mind delighted in learning everything he could from the elder dragons, he left his brother further and further behind, until eventually, with sad eyes, Hamal had said his farewells. Hadir had begged his brother not to leave, convinced that his distancing was the reason for his friend's abrupt decision, but Hamal had only smiled and nudged him with his tail. Both Imperials, and ever mindful of the horror stories Caph and Crexal were fond of - the consequences of Imperials getting too close - the physical contact had shocked him. He had frozen, and watched as his brother drifted out to Sea, and then vanished beneath the waves, dragged down by the unseen claws of the Tidelord.

After the loss of his brother, Hadir found that he could hardly bear to look at the water anymore. He had served as one of the clan's hunters, diving and fishing with Fime and Kohaku. The idea that he could no longer be of use terrified him, especially now when he most needed a distraction.

Mnementh was the one to rescue him from his mind. Styrkur, he said, had discovered a cavern beneath the lair. He had broken through to it quite by accident and had panicked for a moment, thinking he had lost his bearings, for the cave was lit by starlight. The starlight had turned out to be the inner light from hundreds and thousands of crystals, embedded in ceiling and walls.

Mnementh was planning an excavation (with help from Styrkur and Sarin), and perhaps to begin mining the cave in earnest. Hadir leapt at the chance, and threw himself blissfully into the agonisingly hard work of extracting the gems and carting them back to the cavern entrance, where Diothos would take over.
