When her egg cracked open, the hatchling tumbled out into an abandoned nest. Cracked egg shells littered the nest around her, but somehow in the clan’s move, hers had been forgotten. Arcanis woke up alone, unnamed and soft, in the middle of a never-ending field of grass.

Survival was her first and only instinct for many seasons. As the wildclaw hatchling grew, surviving on bugs and grass she could find, she became more adept at hiding, hunting, and when the time came – fighting. Conflict in the expansive field of the Windswept Plateau was uncommon, but not unknown. A lone Wildclaw female was a target, but Arcanis soon became a familiar face in the fields, a beacon of fury that led most to leave her alone.

She was content in that life, to be alone. She had her pick of her hunting grounds, and no challengers to the territory she claimed for herself near the Reedcleft Ascent, able to scale and climb the cliffs with a natural grace that kept her safe in one of the hidden caves there.

It was not to last.

It was a rainy day when Arcanis met the first of her clan, begrudging. The storm had swept in and took with it the scents of the prey she had been tracking through the morning. Miserable and hungry, Arcanis had begun her return to the cave in the Ascent when she stumbled into Caecus, blinded by some silly scarf over his eyes.

She snarled and swiped at the cloth, yanking it down hard off of his face. “Watch it!” She growled, stalking past the Wildclaw male. While she was content to do nothing but go home, Caecus was struck dumb by the dragoness.

He followed.

He didn’t stop following, even after Arcanis threw a reed at him and swiped at his face. “What is your name?”

“Why does it matter?” She growled, busily climbing the cliffs and growing more annoyed with the realization that he, too, was an adept climber. He must’ve been born in the fields like her, though she doubted he’d survived on his own.

“Where are we going?”

“Nowhere!” She bit out, clambering up onto a platform that led to her cave.

“Ha – funny name for the middle of the Ascent.” Caecus climbed up after her, grinning. “I’m Caecus.” He offered, holding out a claw. Arcanis just glared at it, until he withdrew it. “What’s your name?”

Arcanis snarled at him, stalking into her cave. He pursued, anyway.

It took several weeks for Caecus to wring out even the most basic conversation from Arcanis, and he learned a great many things about the fields, the hunting grounds, the best places to store food away from others, how to keep a cave dry…

But he still didn’t know her name.

The reason why dawned on him one early morning when they were gathering food, he enthusiastically gathering for the both of them and she begrudgingly dividing what she found into rations. It seemed she was never getting rid of him, anyway, and she didn’t want a starved Wildclaw to look after. If he was fed, he could be of use.

“You don’t have a name, do you?” He asked suddenly.

Arcanis froze, a growl building at the back of her throat, and swiped at him again. “It doesn’t matter! Why do you keep caring about that? In the weeks you’ve been living in my den and eating my food, you’ve learned more than enough about my life.” She snarled. “Why does a name matter to you so much!”

“Why didn’t they give you one?” Caecus was genuinely confused, not thrown at all by the outburst. Arcanis was a wild and often easily infuriated dragon. That was the first thing he’d learned about her.

Arcanis just snorted at him, going back to her gathering and keeping an eye on a nearby family of dragons. She knew the territory lines like a cartographer, and they were within their own boundaries. Caecus watched from his space, gathering halfheartedly as he tried to work it out in his head.

A lightbulb went off, metaphorically. “… You… don’t have a family, do you? You didn’t, I mean.”

Arcanis grimaced at that, shooting him a dark glare. “I’ve survived on my own pretty well, I think.” She bit out. He nodded a little at that, and hopped up.

“Well. Everyone needs a name.” He said, holding out his claw. Arcanis eyed it, squinting at him and snorting under her breath. “Hi Arcanis. I’m Caecus.”

“… That’s a stupid name.” Arcanis threw the bag of gathered food over her shoulder to carry it back to the den, swiping past him. He grinned anyway and followed, closing up his bag.

“Unless you have better suggestions… Where’re we going?”

“Nowhere.”

“You could just call it home, you know.” He dodged the next swipe with a cheeky grin.

Over time, Caecus was not the only dragon to join Arcanis in her den. Soon, a flock of dragons joined her, one after another. Malitia first, and then the children. Soon Arcanis was hosting a great number of dragons in the catacomb of caves that had been expanded and built out.

A much older dragon now, Arcanis watched the happenings of her clan from a perch high above it all. A fight to protect Caecus’s neck took one eye from her, but it remained covered. The hatchlings that were born in their nests didn’t need to see the scars riddling her face from that battle.

They were growing at an ever-expanding rate, and she knew that sooner or later, she would have to name an heir, and attend to the move to a larger territory for their family. Still wary of new dragons, Arcanis left the diplomacy to Caecus and Malitia, trusting them to make the every-day decisions on their own. She was content in her position as a final vote caster.

They would need to be able to make these decisions when she stepped down.
