The first and the last thing that Altair knows…

Altair has seen it all his life: Knows it, lives it--was born into it. In the heart of the ice domain, just south of The Fortress Of Ends. With the Gaolers and the blizzards, and the sheer, sheer cold on all sides--he was home. He was free.
(And in his clan? He was a prince.
But now...
...He isn't quite sure.)
Like all dragons born under the Icewarden, Altair was granted the same gift: the gift of elemental magic. It flowed through his veins, imbued in everything he did. Crafts, storytelling, performances...
...battle.
(He didn’t want this--but their enemies were getting closer and their supplies were running out and Father said--
Altair doesn’t complain.)
He’s surrounded by screaming and chaos. Dragons are fleeing and dragons are fighting and Father is gone and--
The icy chill that has comforted him all his life suddenly terrifies him now.
(Altair does the only thing he knows.)
Entirely encased, the healer tells him, a miracle you survived.
(He’s not entirely sure he did.)
