~ s t o r y ~ Taika’s parent’s are the leaders of a venerable and quite large arcane clan, functionally royalty in the right circles. Thus, she was born into a life of privilege and advantage, but also expectations and restrictions. She hated it, and so she left. Unlike the stories of such instances published in pulp novels or recounted in fairy tales, her decision came with no great fanfare. Her parents were a prolific pair, and as such the line of succession was well-secured. Many of her siblings left the comforts of the clan to go serve the Arcanist directly, so her decision was unusual only in that she left with no plan in mind beyond a journey and no desire to join the ranks of the exalted. To facilitate the wandering lifestyle she desired, she searched out a scroll to change her breed to that of a snapper, designed by the Earthshaker for long, rambling treks. Unfortunately, breed change scrolls, being complex pieces of magic, did not come cheaply, and in giving up the responsibilities of her family, she had also given up its privileges. In her search for work she could do, she fell into an alchemy apprenticeship. The art of alchemy was not new in Sornieth, but the recent developments of Baldwin had reinvigorated greater society’s interest in the craft, and the trade was booming. Her mentor, a crotchety old pearlcatcher, was deeply unimpressed with Baldwin and what she considered the sin of altering the Lightweaver’s design, but she was savvy enough to capitalize on the craze. It was under her tutelage that Taika learned the traditionally improvisational approach to alchemy, and on her own time, blended it with the modern recipes from Baldwin that was taking the continent by storm. By the time she’d saved up for the scroll, her teacher felt she’d mastered the trade, and Taika was finally able to set out on her journey. Her alchemy is less predictable than Baldwin’s, but a sight more reliable than traditional methods. When she arrives at a new town, she sets up her stall and settles Pata, her familiar, down in a corner, lays out her tools, and centers herself. Taika offers the standard services expected of a travelling alchemist, selling materials and brewing known recipes, but she also has a standing offer - bring her three items and a wish, and she’ll see what she can do. ~ r e l a t i o n s h i p s
