Biography
Goddess of Nightmares, wife to the God of Dreams
Vines curl out from under rot-burrowed soil. Decay-born thorns rip slowly through soft flesh, gentle in their cruelty, stilling movement and dragging what once breathed into suffocating, silent soil. Perhaps that ending - last gasps of breath and fading strength in trembling limbs - perhaps it is harsh; yet equally so, would you not say, was the endless suffering of pain? Hush now as you thrash in fitful nightmares; sorrows drown out beneath the flood of mournful music; the singing of the funeral harp quiets fast-beating hearts and rocks you dead to sleep. Gently, with respect, the little things come: mushrooms knit bone to earth and little creatures feast. The seasons turn and flowers bloom and stolen lungs breathe new life into green shoots of barbed thorns.
He curls over her and her heart flutters, sings, threatens to burst out of her chest on hummingbird wings. A little smirk flits across his snout, smug pleasure from having sent her into giddy joy. Thus begins the first of infinite days and nights. And when she dreams in blood and beetles, when thorns cuff her talons to the earth, he turns dust into the green and growing - plants shooting skyward until the chains all shatter into sparkling jewelry. By seapetals and shimmering aquamarine cloaks, gift by gift she is loved until she turns and trips and falls and loves back, loves harder than she's ever loved in her life. And when fire and lightning splits his trees; when droughts lay siege to timid shoots and cracked brown twigs cage him into stillness, she sends the earthworms burrowing and sows hardy vines into the earth until it is churned into new life. The dance of hide and seek, cruelty and dark secrets, transforms into the step, spin, twirl of thrilling and thoughtless love. Suddenly it is so easy, this movement, this gentle rhythm. His breath matches hers and her claws step where his do and the rest of the world quells beneath the power throbbing between them.
