Hawthorne

Hawthorne was once a renowned sailor in his living days. He was a reliable and stern captain of shipments and trade exports between the flights, and his silver tongue made him a good negotiator.

One day, there was a storm. Hawthorne’s ship capsized and unfortunately his crew was lost to the untamable ocean waves… Hawthorne could only watch as his precious shipments were ruined by the water. As he sank further and further down, forever lost to the sea, he was greeted by a massive shining eye that peered at him from the depths. A legendary sea monster of the deep had discovered his plight and was willing to rescue him— in exchange for something precious.

Hawthorne agreed to the deal. He was to give up his soul to the monster in exchange for his life— or the half-life he would now lead, as it were. He would eternally serve the sea monster, all so he could continue to sail the seas of Sornieth for as long as his remained, until his soulless body withered away to nothing.

Without a soul, Hawthorne grew twisted and dark. He now led the life of a pirate, and not an export trader. The villages he once served he now pillaged, alongside a ragtag yet motley crew of others like him. The seas he sailed grew treacherous and dark, fraught with monsters and danger. He never forgot his deal with the monster, and vowed to one day find a way to betray it and free himself and his crew from their curse forever.
