the campfire crackles, low and soothing
humming vibrates, deep and musing
unusual eyes, peering and pausing
a traveler? how fascinating.

see these skulls, of prey and peers
see this fire, the spirits fear
the leaves still fall, the moon still leers
'cause life goes on, as i still sit here.

there are cycles, circling, soul and sun
and cobwebs spun of the unbecome.
These old bones rest, in a mortal frame
no god would ever choose a body so restrained.

and as smoke drifts higher to meet the stars
i see that your skin is riddled with scars
and your soul is bared, at this fire's hearth
just the nature of camping in the woods at dark.

why do your bones rattle and pray?
i'm not one to hurt someone looking for space.
just an elder looking to put bones in a case
'cause morality is just such a fragile thing.

and i see, you take your leave, another i've chased away
is it these claws? is it the horns that i've made?
or these skulls, grinning empty, surrounding the fire's blaze
or maybe it's me. all alone, to contemplate.
