The smell of old dust tickles her nose as Aridatha creeps deeper into the warehouse. She pauses for a moment to breathe deep, searching for any other smell—but the sweet tingle of arcane energy does not reach her nose, nor the ozone crackle of lightning, or anything else besides just plain, boring dust. Boring is good. She likes boring. Boring means she doesn't end up flat on her back with a bloody nose. She should have known it wouldn't last. She barely gets a warning in the form of a rattling snarl before something bursts out of one of the crates to her left. All its weight slams into her chest like a pile of bricks as it pounces, and both her and the creature are sent tumbling, Aridatha's wings flaring wide and her hind legs making dull thuds as they kick against metal. A construct. It's a construct. Some kind of spidery thing pulsing with blue light and she hisses in the back of her throat and breathes, breathes and focuses, channeling her inner magic— "Augh!" Pain lances through her chest and shoulder as the clockwork spider sinks fangs into her. With a yell she musters enough strength to throw the thing off of her, scrambling to her feet as the spider crashes roughly into another group of crates with a cacophony of shattering glass and splintering wood. Despite herself, she winces. Hopefully that wasn't important… There's a scuttling tap-tap-tap-tap of metal on wood and stone as the creature rolls back onto its spindly feet and starts coming for her again, but this time she has a spell ready. A beam of light bright as daybreak splits the dimness of the warehouse without warning. Little rivulets of smoke rise up from the creeper's casing as the focused beam heats hot enough to melt metal. As suddenly as it came, the sunbeam fades. Aridatha stands there, breathing heavily, waiting for the mechanical spider to come for her again. The creature takes a few, stumbling steps towards her, then veers hard to the right, smacking into a shelf and flipping over, legs kicking uselessly at the air. …thank the Lightweaver. At least it's out of commission. She feels a trickle of blood run down her chest and sighs, noting the throbbing pain where the spider bit her. That stings. Comes with the job, unfortunately. At least she'll be able to negotiate some extra hazard pay from her client when she comes back with evidence of this smuggling ring. Light embodies fairness, logic. Knowledge. Above all: truth. Is it any wonder, then, that Aridatha chose to be a private investigator? Tired of the constant, petty gossip of Pearlcatcher society and looking for a way out of the social squabbles that surrounded her, Aridatha took wing and left her home clan as soon as she was old enough to live on her own. She was tired of the dragons around her arguing in endless circles about something that wouldn't matter in two weeks. She was tired of the same, stale cliques. It was all just so… pointless. She wanted something more. She wanted to do something that mattered. That combined with a fierce independent streak and a willingness to take risks that most Pearlcatchers wouldn't led her to her current occupation. She's willing to investigate any crime, track any dragon… for a price. Her element symbolizes truth, and truth is what she'll find. No matter what. |
