Basilio is hatched to the leaders of the clan on the eve of a great journey. He is still just learning to fly when they set out, and grows up in a series of camps, each one more unnerving than the last. At last, they reach their destination: a cliff facing the Forbidden Portal. The Portal's eerie light is inescapable as the clan begins to build a new lair. Basilio and his siblings are often left in the care of their older brother Rielle and his mate while their parents are drawn into constant consultations about the lair.

As Basilio grows older, he gets terrible headaches. His parents are worried, at first, that he may be cursed. But none of the clan's witches and advisors can find the source of his ailment. As his pain worsens, so too does his temper. He gets in argument after argument with the rest of the clan, becoming more stubborn with each encounter. When he announces his departure, there are many who are more relieved than upset.

Basilio believes that the allied clans would be better off under a single, strong leader; himself. He seeks to unify the dragons under his banner, these attempts normally fail, however a small group of dragons have joined him in this pursuit.

Since his arrival, Basilio has made himself an enemy of Alexander, often opposing him during council meetings, and insulting him. Those insults eventually resulted in a duel against Alexander. While Basilio is skilled in matters of debate, he is not as skilled in a duel, which he quickly found out, when he was not able to land a single blow on Alexander, whereas his opponent nearly sliced his wing off.
