Only a few seconds remained before the barrier came back online. Going back wasn't an option anymore, but he knew that when this all started. The city of Nova Variatis was too far gone, the Overseers corrupt, the denizens blinded.

A familiar shock made it's way through his spinal cord as the built-in circuits rebelled against his actions - but ceased as he passed the width of the great walls that blockaded the city from the great, expanse of a wasteland known as The Rift. Breathe in, breathe out. It wasn't over just yet. Keep running.

There was a rebellion out there in the dust, preparing for a fight that would change this city for the better. And he would gladly join them.
Variant was rebellious from the start. He could tell that things were wrong, even as a hatchling. The city felt too.. plastic, too fixated and soulless. The Denizens would plunge themselves into false realities and memories of long-gone times. Why couldn't they go past the walls? Surely not everything was a wasteland. Surely there was something more, something the Overseers didn't want anyone to see or know.

It took years to plan his eventual escape - pretending, planning, falsifying himself until finally shutting down the grid. Just momentarily enough to fly over the walls and scramble outside into The Rift. There he eventually found the rebels, and quickly joined their ranks. It wasn't long before he was placed as second in command.
