Biography
Pronouns: He/Him
Sexuality: Straight
Hale is based on Reverend John Hale, specifically his depiction in The Crucible, a play written by Arthur Miller during the Cold War about the Salem Witch Trials as a satire of McCarthyism. In the play, Hale is called to Salem to investigate Betty Parris who refuses to wake up after being found dancing in the woods with some of the other girls of Salem. He determines the cause to be witchcraft, starting the Salem Witch Trials. Ay first, he has total faith in the justice system but when devout Christian Rebecca Nurse is accused, he starts to lose faith in the trials, though only partly as he believes that she will be acquitted.
However, after Rebecca's jailing, other events and accusations cause Hale to see the courts in a new light, with the final straw being Judge Danforth refusing to believe that the trials were an act of revenge by Abigail Williams, one of the main girls accusing people of witchcraft, despite the fact that the confession of adultery by John Proctor wouldn't be something an innocent person would do. He proceeds to quit the court and leave Salem. He returns several months later in order to try and get at least one of the accused to confess to stop them from hanging as he feels guilty. Basically, Reverend Hale is the only one who has any real, noticeable character development which is why I like him enough to make a fan dragon for him. Also, I wanted a companion of sorts for Salem.
