Kintsugi is an odd duck in a Clan of researchers, having dedicated herself to art rather than the study of history or science, like most of her peers have. She was originally adopted into the Clan for the medical biologists to study the unusual curse that plagues her family's lineage-- a condition that causes deep cracks to form and spread across the dragon's body as it ages-- in the hope of one day finding a cure. As a hatchling, she stumbled upon a beautiful black vase laced through with golden cracks in the collection of one of the Clan's archeologists, and was instantly enamored. The vase was broken, cracked like her, but it had been put back together in a way that enhanced its beauty. No, more than that, the imperfections were the very source of its beauty. They were highlighted for the world to see, not hidden away as though they were something shameful. The kintsugi style of pottery became both her namesake and her inspiration.

Years later, the Clan's medical biologists, working together with their arcanist contemporaries, would find a cure for Kintsugi's mysterious condition. While she would ultimately accept treatment to stop the spreading of the cracks for her own health and safety, she vehemently refused any reversal or removal of the curse's effects on her appearance, proudly choosing to bear her scars for the world to see, just like her beloved pottery.

These days, Kintsugi dedicates herself to creating unique pottery, breaking items deemed inauthentic or knockoffs by the Clan's archeologists and historians, and piecing them back together with gold paint in their cracks, creating beauty from their imperfections.

The thin and elegant patterns like veins over their scales are a common thing, something to be expected of themselves and their children. It could be due that why they worry for one of their hatchlings. The veins themselves looked cracked, a viscous sheen of some sort of substance seeping from them that covers the baby's body in an alarming way and that no matter how much they try to wash it away, it always comes back, bit by bit, never-ending.

Layel can see it happening to her mate as well. Spreading just a little bit more with each year that goes by. Any day now, she muses as she traces her claws over her own patterns in the darkness of their den, she waits for the day in which they will consume her too.
