Nothing is perfect.

Everyone makes mistakes.

Deities aren’t an exception.

No, emperors weren’t the only ones. Countless other mistakes, or rather, the result of mistakes, are scattered across Sornieth. Nocturne dragons twice as small as normal, or the genes of a dragon invisible to anyone other than them. More mistakes, errors, glitches, or whatever a dragon might call them exist; many, many more. This is the story of one, after all.

The Earthshaker created Obelisks with care; carved each of them with attention; they were his children. Made as protectors for their family; for the Earth Flight and more, and protectors of their family they would be.

The first few attempts are never ideal, though.

Long, long after the echoes of cracking stone and resounding roars fade, the prototypes climb out of the ground and open their eyes.

There had been a voice. A voice laced deep with affection, sadness, and disappointment. Only one had been toward them. When their dark green eyes opened, they knew something was wrong, that something was missing.

In the corner of their eye, they see another… something carefully crossing the weird blue thing. It hurt their eyes to look at for too long, and it was making a “fwwsh” voice constantly. The voice said something about a river and some “Tidelord”? Maybe that was what it was. They turn their head behind them, and see a few more somethings with the same shape as the one who crossed the “river”. Was that what they were too? Following the one who crossed the river sounded like a great idea at the time; and so, they followed.

Soon after, they learn that normal “dragons”(which was what they were called, apparently) could make sounds from their throat, and that normal dragons had wings that let them be in the sky. They learn that normal dragons didn’t have nothing under their head, and that normal dragons had a name.

Then, they meet the “Obelisks” who looked like the dragons in the dark place by the river with them. They learn who the voice in their head was, and they learn that the voice gave the Obelisks names. They learn that the voice taught the Obelisks everything they needed to know, and that the voice treated them as his own children. They learn of the mission the voice gave the Obelisks.

The voice never gave them a name, it- He never gave them a voice, he never gave them wings. The voice never taught them everything they needed to know; the voice didn’t tell them his name. The voice never treated them as his children. The voice never gave them a mission to save the other dragons.

Were they not good enough? Was that why the voice was disappointed?

(Maybe they could find the voice and ask him to give them a voice and wings and a name. Maybe if they could find the voice, he wouldn’t be disappointed in them, and teach them everything they needed to know, and treat them as his children.)

Maybe.

Maybe was good enough.
