Biography
Luminax is a breed of coatl that live exclusively inside deep rifts and gorges in the lightning domain. These so called "abyss flares" are thought to be the origin of the saying "when you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back". Abyss flares live off of the light and energy provided when a lightning storm passes their gorge and the shards of light penetrate deep enough to reach them. When a storm approaches, Abyss flares like to climb and fly as high as they ever dare to ensure they get enough lightning.
A charged Abyss flare will have bright luminescent patterns on their scales and feathers, tge more recently they charged, the brighter their colours. Dragons prefer bright mates and since usually all dragons in the same rift will charge in the same lightning storm, those that fly higher and closer to the lightning blasts will be brighter. This is rather dangerous as a direct strike can still kill these dragons. Some are lucky and do not have to participate in such lethal acrobatics as they are predisposed to retain their "flaring" better. Whether a dragon prefers a mate that needs to charge more but can defenitely defy danger with their nimble flying or a mate that can survive lightning droughts but might not be as quick is up to them. The best pairs seem to have one of each to give their hatchlings the best mix.
Hatching and raising Abyss flares in incredibly difficult and requires timing and luck. Abyss flares hatch as pitch black little hatchlings and require to be fed on lightning within a few hours of their birth or they will not survive. Thus parents must time their incubation well and place their nest sites as high as they dare for open access to the skies. Abyss flare hatchlings can stay in their eggs a bit longer if required until the air prickles with electricity or they get rained on. This helps to ensure that lightning will be available for their very first charge. This also means that parents absolutely cannot allow their eggs to get wet if lightning is not coming or else the hatchling will hatch at the wrong time. Parents will hudlle together, wings covering any openings, while their fluffy waterproof chests protect their eggs.
It is unadvisable to approach parents in this pose if its raining as they are already very stressed and will feel threatened whild they cannot move from their nests. If a perceived danger comes too close, one of the parents will gather the lightning flowing through their veins and blast the attacker with lethal voltage. They leave this as a last resort as the dragon will usually die from exhaustion afterwards. In some cases a desparate parent might blast their last charge near their newly hatched young if a storm has been missed but only if there is another parent. Even then this is rarely done.
Luminax is one of the deep hatches. His nest was placed at the lowest level of his gorge where it would be save from predetors but the chances of lightning reaching that far would normally deter parents. Some older dragons see this as the right way for Abyss flares to hatch - at the lowest abyssal depths. Hatchling laid here usually do not make it so this practice is frowned upon. Yet it does come with some merit, which is the ability to grow biolouminescent fungi on the dragons themselves which can be used to store excess lightning energy helping dragons to last longer at their abyssal depths. If a dragon overcharges or is even struck by lightning, then some of these fruiting mushrooms can pop to release the lightning flow and potentially help the dragon survive.
