the god's lament, it kills anything born in sunlight

s t o r y It started with a rumor. At first, there was nothing special about it- whispers in the dark, mere threads of something that no one really believed anyways. So some old loon shouted at them, what did it matter? He was a fool. A madman. Not a single soul in all of Erystys would be so witless as to put their faith in a homeless Pearlcatcher babbling to the capital, a no one full of delusions of what had once been. But their kings started to disappear and their crowns went missing, and the people weren't so sure anymore. Locks clicked, spells learned, taught and cast in quick succession. Knocks and new languages were developed in mere hours by the smartest of them to signify who was free, and who was lost. The aim was protection; the result, destruction. You see, no matter how smart the Erystians were... barring oneself behind walls and secrets also barred them from escaping the enemy they couldn't see. Days, months, went by, only a few, restless. What made you decide I was lying? Years, nearly half the populace was unraveling. Where are your deities now?, he would raise his snout in a sneer, looking into the eyes of survivors, who only stared back with wide, scared faces. Where were they when I was right and they were wrong? Where are they to save you? A hundred, and the only survivors were the beasts who hadn't let it drive them mad-- or the ones smart enough to know better. Who is your god now? A thousand, they finally began to learn how to live with the enemy they couldn't fight. Not a single one of you is smart enough to escape the Dark, do you know how I know? His eyes would blink asymetrically, the one blind seeming to penetrate their soul. Not a single one of you listened to me. |
