How to capture the fleeting joy of life? The beauty of those moments that last a fraction of a second but stay in your memory forever? It took Florizel a while to find the perfect medium. Flower petals, fragile yet stunning, with colors that encompass every emotion. Most importantly, they are as temporary as lives he wanted to celebrate with them. It is true he sometimes encased his creations in amber or other protective materials, after all, an artist who can't sell his art goes hungry. But his favorite pieces were the ones made of fresh flowers. The ones that whitered as the sun finished its descent. Florizel didn't mind spending hours upon hours painstakingly laying down the fragile droplets of color in elaborate patterns. He knew that everyone who would see his limited exhibitions would carry the experience with them for the rest of their lives. The only problem was that some of his fans wanted to…talk. His work spoke for him, Florizel thought. Why should he stand around and explain it? He would always go out of his way to stay hidden in the gallery until…

Until he saw her. You see, whenever Florizel finished his latest masterpiece, he would be surrounded by stems and leaves, plucked and colorless. To some, this might have seemed sad and dull, but Florizel always considered the leftover plant parts to be the sign of a successful creation. Rosse was a rose stem. Bare of any petals, all thorns and rough edges. Fierce, prickly…beautiful. She was the first visitor he voluntarily spoke to. Florizel thought it went well. Rosse thought telling someone they look like a bare plucked rose stem was super weird. She told him as much, with a couple of irritated expletives on top. Who the hell does that? Nobody was going to get under her skin, Rosse thought. Especially not some eccentric rainbow guy who was so shy he asked her if she could ASK THE WAITER TO BRING HIM A DRINK? Was he serious?

What Rosse didn't know back then was that Florizel would become her biggest fan. Rosse's art was…strange. To her, the fleeting beauty of life was best captured with what comes after. Her first big exhibition, held on one fated Thursday, consisted of little taxidermied plague creatures she found in her homeland. They were all of the same species, with different mutations. Some died of natural causes, just a few moments after birth, too malformed to live. Some lived for decades, hardened by all the acid and danger. But in Rosse's eyes, every second of their lives was precious and meaningful. It didn't matter if they saw the sky with six eyes or none at all. They all mattered. She invited Florizel to her exhibition mostly to scare him off. She was sure the flower weirdo was going to panic and stop following her around like a lost puppy.

"Oh my, look at the way this one's tails are all calloused. Do you think it used them as extra limbs? And this one! The scales are all different shades of green, that must have been amazing camouflage,” gushed Florizel as he darted from one piece to another, finding something fascinating about every single one of them. He lamented an early death of the conjoined one (Rosse's favorite) and immediately wondered if he could recreate the strange form with white rose petals. Florizel didn't see anything morbid in Rosse's creations. After all, the flowers he used for his art were doomed before he even started. They might have looked gorgeous, but they were all cut off from their bushes and roots, slowly dying for the pursuit of perfection. “This was brilliant, my sharp little thorn, please do invite me to the next one!” he beamed after the gallery closed and it was just him and Rosse cleaning up the place.

There was only one sale made. Conjoined albino creature. Purchased by Florizel.
