━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Food, broken pottery and an assortment of random possessions lay scattered around the dead fire. The ashes were still warm, and Lamae could catch a tinge of smoke in the air. ‘Seems they left in a hurry,’ she commented to her mate and scavenger-in-arms, Sadrus. ‘Think they’ll circle back? Meat’s still fresh, fair amount of it, too.’

‘Probably,’ the Pearlcatcher replied shortly. His attention was elsewhere, as Lamae found when she turned to look at him, only to find that he’d disappeared into the folds of a nearby tent, the tip of his tail rustling the bone chimes hung up at its entrance. The sound was eerie in the quiet. ‘Come look at this,’ Sadrus called from inside. Lamae dropped the sack she’d been stuffing the scavenged supplies into, and went around to stick her head in the tent. The last candle within snuffed out with the air blown in by her movement, and she had to squint her eyes to see what it was that Sadrus was focusing on.

It was a nest. Shoddily built, with bits of sharp bone sticking out through the liquid membrane that was supposed to hold the incubating eggs. There was one still inside, abandoned in the flurry of its parents’ leaving, but no - as Lamae’s eyes adjusted to the darkness, she saw the egg had already been spilt. The hatchling was gooey and red, laying still in a stew of membranes, broken shell, and water from its egg. Laying too still; at last she saw the final piece of the puzzle. A jut of bone she had mistaken for a piece of shell, sticking out its thigh. The real reason the egg had been left behind.

‘That’s what they get for shoddy construction,’ Sadrus spat, looking back at her. ‘No chance of it surviving, might as well put it out of its misery.’ He turned and bent his head toward the nest. ‘Wait,’ Lamae said hurriedly, and Sadrus gave her a questioning look. ‘Couldn’t it have a chance, if we brought it with us?’

‘Don’t be ridiculous,’ he growled. ‘It’s already too late. Look closer, Lamae. That colour’s not all from the egg.’

‘A fighting chance cares not for probability,’ she argued, quoting one of their tenets, despite knowing her mate hated hearing them. ‘We have the means to carry it back, and if it lives, we’ll gain our ranks.’

‘And who will feed it, and heal the wound, and carry it to the pits and back for its business when it’s too lame to do anything itself?’ Sadrus said, his spines prickling. ‘You’ll lose your ranks, not gain them if you carry through with this, and I’m not interested in sharing the fallback for your insanity.’ But despite the assertation, he still hovered over the hatchling, waiting for her acquiescence.

He received his answer. There was a shift, then... silence.
