"Do the innocent have to suffer such a fate?..."
An old legend tells of a wealthy family of Wildclaws in the Wandering Contagion who hatched two eggs: one a pure, pristine white-colored Wildclaw, and the other pitch-black. The guardians, who were quite frightened at the discoloration of their children, whisked them away and hid them from the outside world. The two Wildclaws grew up in the sheltered household with all that they needed -- a luxurious den, lavish meals... but the two always wondered what laid beyond the walls of their home.
One day, the white-colored Wildclaw came up with a plan -- they would distract their parents by causing a discrepancy, and sneak out of the den. That night, the pitch-black Wildclaw smacked their tail against a vase, and knocked it down, the shattering sound reverberating all around the den. He snuck away before their parents could realize he had done it, and while they were fussing about the broken vase, the two Wildclaws slinked out of the entrance of the den.
The siblings wandered far and wide, astonished by the vast surroundings of the wasteland. But they had not prepared for the cruel world that they had entered. Soon enough, the two grew weak from malnourishment. Just as they were about to die, though, a mysterious entity appeared in front of them. It spoke in an eerie, gravelly voice, almost like they were hearing words from the darkness itself.
The entity told them that it could save them from dying -- at a price. The Wildclaws, dazed and disoriented from malnourishment, instantly agreed. So the entity granted them life, but had amalgamated them into one dragon; one who could not feed on meat or plants, but the souls of dragons.
The Wildclaw-like creature now wanders in the Scarred Wasteland, waiting for young dragons who had wandered away from their dens to beckon them to follow and lead them to their demise.
This tale was used to scare hatchlings out of rebelling against their guardians, and is hardly believed after adulthood. But sightings of the odd creature tempting dragons to come closer, yet scarce, are still evident.
