Xanthia is born to Vivianne and Styx, a pair of powerful witches. She learns from a young age how to mix potions, weave charms, and cast enchantments. She is repeatedly cautioned not to draw her energy from the stars, a restriction that is backed up by Vivianne's worsening condition.

But while Xanthia heeds their warnings well, her magic still ends up strange. No matter how pure her intentions, every spell she casts comes with an unexpected cost. The built in monkey's paw effect seeds a deep sorrow in her mothers. After all, it is definitive proof that Vivianne's condition is not only incurable, but hereditary. Although they both love Xanthia dearly, the young dragon can't help but wonder if they would do better without the unpleasant reminder inherent to her existence.
