Biography

Baal didn’t know how to feel about the offer.

Aklys was honorable. He looked up to him his whole life. The Ridgeback had been constantly teaching him, directing him into a dragon much more than he was. He was the one who convinced Sahara to keep him, after all, when he went scavenging in the outskirts of the Lightning Flight and spotted him. He had done everything, and all he asked in return was to take in technology. He did, and he loved it. Once Aklys shoved a wrench in his talons, something sparked. Baal could create things with the workshop around him, and Aklys would pull his teeth up to what seemed to be a smile.

It wasn’t long until Daiki came as well. Her energy was unmatched, her talent, according to Aklys, was lackluster. Despite his comments, the way she talked about the Ridgeback was as if she was worshipping a deity. He could only nod as a hatchling. The elder dragon was cool. His strength in alchemy and experience of builds was what gave him the love he wanted, but he wasn’t always on his mind. It seemed like Daiki, however, was wondering what she could fold in her talons for him to gawk at. At the end of it, it was her obsession that made her go on par with him.

“Child,” Aklys called out. He cracked one of those tiny smiles, and held out his claws. “It is an honor to be the next in my studies. You’ve proved yourself, and have done so much.”

He worked for the position, but not as much as she did. He woke in countless nights to see Daiki experimenting with the metals, carving them and wedging them with her talons. Baal envied how easily she did it. There was a mixture of determination on her face, and something told him it didn’t feel forced. He tried doing the same, but he wasn't going forth. It wasn’t as easy for him to get into the groove, to create just as simply as she did. Baal had the talent, but she had the style.

The Imperial caught a glance at the shaking Mirror. Her two sets of eyes stared blankly, as if she was spacing out, but she continued to beam so optimistically. It was funny, really, because her scales weren’t scrunched into compact balls on her face. The happiness in her eyes looked true. Even then, it didn’t seem forced.

That was right.

Everything was forced with him. Baal wanted to stand by Aklys, ever since he spent weeks convincing Sahara and Cool to let him stay. It showed him that he wanted to see Baal around, and that was all he wanted. But the first day he was approved to stay, he was handed some tools and told to work. If he wasn’t doing his skills or eating, there were intense punishments. A smack on the head when he was little. As he got taller, taking away his meals and reminding him of his upbringing sufficed. So he limped along the path Aklys made for him. He forced his talons to labor on and on. Even if his mind said he didn’t want to do it so often, his heart refused. He was told by Aklys that he wielded the metals like a weapon. Baal now knew it was a shield.

He dipped his head. “I’m afraid that I’ll have to refute the offer. The material is beyond me,” before his mentor could respond, he gestured lightly towards the Mirror beside him. “Daiki has been much greater than me on this journey, and I believe she should be mentored under you instead.”

Pulling his head back, Baal expected a bit of an explosion. Instead, the green dragon only had his piercing eyes on Daiki, as if she were from the Kingdom. “Mentorship is key to success,” he noted, rather calm. “I do advise you to follow your heart, and not give in to whatever she told you.”

“She told me nothing!” he blurted. “I-I just don’t think I can be the next successor.”

“But you have the talent, boy! Under my talons, you can—“

“I don’t want to do this,” His eyes gazed down at his former mentor. The dragon could see the wide-eyed Mirror off the corner of his eyes. The Imperial pulled his goggles over his forehead and into his claws. “Thank you for the offer, but it is not what I deserve to be bestowed.”

The Ridgeback raised a brow. “So you’d rather be amongst the weaker dragons? Waste your talent for pity?”

Even then, Baal could tell none of the anger was on him. Aklys sounded more concerned. His expression was soft, but there was something underlying there. Like he wanted to snap at someone’s neck. But he kept to himself, his dangling potions hanging from his hips.

“That’s fine. I just can’t disappoint you. Apologies.”

“What?” a feminine voice cried. Her pupils dilated as she looked up into the taller dragon’s eyes. “This is such a good thing for you, Baal. You’re really good… like, really good! You really don’t have to go! Aklys doesn’t deserve me. Vorrutyer can—“

With one fowl swoop, he was gone. He couldn’t take her cries. She was like that, sometimes. When they would get into the occasional fight, she would always come back crying. She’d stress how it was her fault, that something can be done. Always finding a way around Baal’s actions, and interning them with her own.

Not this time. His former hobby wouldn’t become his profession. That’d be her. She could be the next. With that spirit, Baal had no doubts about it.

Give her two days, and she’ll be back at it again. Give her two years, and she’ll be a hero.
