But it came at a steep price. There was always a price, as nothing was ever free. Not in the dragon’s realm and not in the spirit’s world. Some things could be given for items the ghastly creatures didn’t have, but other requests were more extreme. There wasn’t a limit on what Haunt could ask for; whether it be from borrowing powers or the ability to see through another animal’s eyes. Haunt was a frequent client of the spirits. She built a reputable name for herself and took pride in being debt-free from the ghost realm. The little dragon played a very dangerous game, though. Some tasks required specific rituals to be done and on some occasions, sacrifices needed to be made. Of these sacrifices, a few were small creatures, but others were larger and harder to keep hidden. Haunt always did what was required of her to complete the deal. She didn’t get what she wanted until the spirits were satisfied. The secrecy aspect of being a mystic came easy to Haunt. She had always preferred being alone and therefore traveled by herself. Others couldn’t see the spirits. Why should she waste her time on those who were so easily expendable to her? The dragon didn’t belong to a clan and liked it that way. This made it easier to perform rituals and not worry about others finding out. It was generally frowned upon to make deals with spirits and ghosts. If one became indebted to the other realm, the spirits would stop at nothing to take what they were owed. The dragon soon learned she could use her good reputation to her advantage. Haunt could talk her way out of performing immediate tasks and push them to a later date. She could receive what she wanted on the spot and continue about her day without doing what would normally be required. The dragon didn’t think of these transfers as debts, but rather transactions at a later date. This allowed for tasks and offerings to pile up. Haunt began to ask many different spirits for things, growing hungry with greed. The ghostly beings always accepted the deal; they were not concerned about collecting what she owed, as they always won in the end. Haunt greatly enjoyed her deals. She was thriving in her own little world. Throughout her months of bartering, she held the ability to view the futures of others and how they would depart this realm. She could turn regular pebbles and rocks into gold, amongst various other unusual powers. The little dragon also held unique items in her possession, one of them being a small, pale blue glowing orb. It gently floated in place above the ground, answering any sort of question that Haunt may ask it. The spirits had gifted her the orb, which was unusual as everything has some sort of price tag. Haunt dismissed this though, assuming that she had just come to be greatly favored by the ghastly beings. The dragon was oblivious to the fact that it was the spirits who were answering her through the orb. They used it to watch and listen to her and grow aware to the fact that she had no intentions of cutting down on her ever-growing list of debts. But she would soon learn of the spirit’s swelling impatience. |

Haunt mistakenly made the assumption that she held power over the spirits. She felt as though she was on top of the world. The little dragon believed she was invulnerable and unable to be held accountable for her previous promises. The spirits felt otherwise, though. The little dragon decided to take a hiatus from the ghastly realm. She had come to accept the fact that she did indeed have obligations to repay those that fulfilled her favors. Although in her mind, the spirits would eventually forget about the debts owed to them and move on. The ghosts were in tune to this due to watching her through the orb and decided that something needed to be done about the small greedy dragon. A slight breeze drifted through the forest late one night, rustling the branches of the tree Haunt was relaxing in. Heavy fog suddenly rolled in and the forest became eerily quiet. The haze twisted and turned, seemingly taking shape of different creatures, but constantly moving enough to remain undistinguished. The little dragon quickly became uneasy, her mind rushing through the long list of debts she had yet to whittle down. She knew that whatever was surrounding her had originated from the spirit realm. Red eyes appeared in the fog, bright and focused through the thick plume of vapor. Haunt heard a deep, booming voice in her mind; the sound didn’t seem to come through her ears, but rather entered directly into her head. “We didn’t forget, little one.” Haunt’s heart raced as she tried to come up with an excuse and plan an escape. How does one outrun fog? The small dragon was unable to say more than a jumbled mess of slurred words, her fear clogging up her throat. The voice spoke into her mind again, the crimson eyes burning holes into Haunt. “Since you feel as though this is a game, we’ll make it one. The debts you’ve collected can be waived, but at its own price. You must find and kill the Windsinger. You have one week.” Devious laughter erupted from inside Haunt’s mind as the unknown voice cackled. The task was impossible and she knew that. The small dragon was unable to form words, her body paralyzed with dreaded horror. She knew she was powerless to negotiate in this situation and a small whimper escaped her. What was going to happen to her after the week was up? Could she simply return everything she had collected? There wasn’t a single soul that would even know she went missing due to her lone nature. The heavy fog began to clear, wisps drifting and circling around Haunt before dissipating into the chilly air. The dragon finally snapped out of her paralysis, darting around and beginning to grab as many things as she could carry. Haunt shot off into the darkness; she didn’t have a destination in mind, but knew she needed to find someplace to hide. The little dragon flew for hours through the forest, staying close to the ground, refusing to succumb to exhaustion. Her body ached and she was running on pure adrenaline. Thoughts rushed through her mind, her eyes barely focused on where she was going. Haunt suddenly slammed into something tall and warm, violently crashing down to the earth. The items she was carrying flew from her grasp, falling to the ground and scattering. A large dragon peered down curiously at the small Fae and the objects surrounding her. Haunt cowered beneath the larger dragon, trying desperately to gather her things. The strange dragon held out an open palm, offering to help carry the Fae’s belongings. Haunt reluctantly accepted, realizing her fate was already sealed with the sprint realm. She followed the large dragon through the forest, aware that she had entered Shadow territory. The stranger soon came upon a small lair nestled deep within the dark forest with a handful of other dragons within. The Fae introduced herself to the others, omitting her debts, acquired abilities and looming destiny. A deep voice suddenly reverberated in her skull, followed by echoing laughter. ”Don't get too comfortable, little one, your clock is still ticking.” |
