Necromancy is a rare art. Few who practice Dark Magic are able to master it. First, the practitioner's motivations must be pure of intent - the stories of necromancer wizards who raise armies of the undead for nefarious purposes are only fairytales meant to instill fear of the unknown. Real necromancy is tricky, and success is often determined by how recently the deceased have passed. Lastly, to save a life, you must take a life. Functionally, this is not as drastic as it sounds. While it is possible for a willing dragon to give their life to save their loved one, it's far safer for a group of dragons to each give a little bit of their lives to save their departed companion.
And yet, the rules of necromancy did not apply to Selket.
Selket hatched stillborn, to the great distress of her parents. They were young, and she was their only egg. Traditional healers were not able to help them, so they sought out Osiris. Osiris explained the cost to the grieving pair, and they willingly accepted the risks.
But it didn't work. Weakened and heartbroken, her parents accepted her loss and left to grieve. Selket was left with Osiris. He wondered perhaps he could discover what went wrong. He tried again, this time using his own life to save the hatchling. It worked, but not as it should. Selket took no life from him, or from her parents. And yet she breathed again.
When Osiris searched for her family, he discovered something unexpected - they had never visited him at all. That is, Selket's family had died months ago, well before her egg had had the chance to hatch. Some things are too frightening to pursue, so Osiris stopped searching for answers and instead took the reborn hatchling to his mate Aset, and the pair decided to raise her together.
As an adult, Selket has a unique connection to death. She can restore life with ease using plants as a life source - something no necromancer has done before. When the departed Mirror Swampbane returned to this world reborn, she was called to him.
