welcome to my table, bring your hunger


It's hard to remember how he ended up in the city to begin with.
He could swear he always lived in Feather, same streets century after century, sometimes even the same faces. His trade was something he never questioned either, coppery smell of blood to accompany the iron, and cold clink of coins in his purse. It all depends, he takes wishes for wishes and dreams for dreams: the more you have, the more you pay. Have nothing at all, and receive everything - blood and flesh and bones, any kind will do.
Hunger is a concept Nuamsaal could never grasp, and yet it felt familiar. In his nightmares he saw himself, eating, devouring, but the feeling would slip away the moment his eyes were open. The memory of roses on the snow is all that was left time after time.

Nothing but white, blinding and shimmering and disgusting white, and he is cold, weak. The voice is gentle, soft, and he can hear a smile in it. It tells him to hold on, just a little bit longer. It's mere days now, it tells.
He's so tired.

The first memory catches him off guard. It forces him to torture himself with questions again, but there's no answers, never any answers. He simply doesn't seem to exist before the city, the Feather. Who named him, who birthed him? No, there's no point in this, he thinks, he has a trade to run. Feather is always full of starving masses, in one way or another.
A thought of starvation makes him uneasy. Especially now, when the old soul returned to forge a new crown of brass and suffering, when famine is a threat again and not a memory. Nuamsaal tells himself it's nothing, he could leave if - when - things go south. In this cutthroat empire he will surely find a place to trade again, won't he?
But he knows he would never leave others to starve.

- Eat up, sweeting.
It's still warm.

A bodyguard to madness, an anchor shared between the two, and the old guts. When Nuamsaal thinks that it can bring some semblance of peace, that he can finally breathe now, his own mind betrays him: the memories are waking up again. Are those just nightmares, evolved and strengthened by the strain, by the stress? He can think of half a dozen reasons and tractations, and he would start with clients who are asking for things deplorable and vile. His nightmares could be just their desires, hunger reflected in his exhausted mind.
For the first time in hundreds of years, Nuamsaal is afraid of the dark.

He doesn't ask anymore, because it's a waste of breath. Step after step, footprints in the deep snow in front of him, a coat of fur. A smile in the gentle voice, a man's voice.
The snowstorm steals it before he can hear the words.
