THE SURVIVOR
focused | defiant | hard-hearted ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ It started with a stomachache. Such things were not terribly uncommon in a land as harsh as theirs, and the first few affected assumed it to be a bad haul from one of their hunts. But as it progressed, it became clear to all that it was not a simple stomach bug. The mild aches progressed to a strange warmth in their bellies. There were remedies for food poisoning and colds, but none for a warmth without cause, and the affected had no choice but to go abed whilst the healers fretted through the night. They awoke at dawn to find the warmth replaced by a searing pain, and those who heaved the contents of their stomachs found that their bile had turned a glowing, sickly green. It blitzed through the clan like a wildfire, too fast for any hope of quarantines to contain the spread, or for the healers to find a cure. The weakest of the clan succumbed, and the rest soon followed. The Plaguebringer loved her children, but it was a love without mercy, and a love easily revoked. Vulca learned of this, and learnt it well, when she returned from a simple week-long sojourn to find her family in ruins. In her grief, against her better judgement, she had gone down to search for survivors and bury the dead. The sickness that clung to them found its way to her, but she had toiled on till all were accounted for. She vowed to love the Mother as faithfully as She had loved her children. So it came to be. And though the Mother would have looked favourably upon Vulca for overcoming what her family could not, she returns Her favour with naught but scorn. Though the plague has burned her skin and sickened her breath, she lives on with the Creed, aiding those spurned and abandoned by their deity in defiance of Her judgement. There is no other sanctuary for one as touched by plague as she, no way beyond her deity’s gaze but death. Such was Her cunning hold on all Her children. Such was life in the realm of the damned. |
