"In our endeavors to recall to memory something long forgotten, we often find ourselves upon the very verge of remembrance, without being able, in the end, to remember."

Although Cumberland is currently incapable of speech, they have quite a rich and bubbly personality. Cumberland will bound over to any new stranger with a repeated greeting, 'caw', similar to their familiar, then happily run circles around the individual. Extremely sociable and trusting, they will attempt to say hello to any living soul who looks their way, which has gotten them and their guardians into many an awkward situation.

But unlike most young Aberrations, they aren't particularly obnoxious or hard to control; it's possible to tell them 'no' or 'stand still' and have them comply, albeit not without a glum expression. Cumberland's manners are also exceptionally good when they know they might get a reward for behaving correctly; they never chew on other dragons' things when visiting, they never caw during silent performances, and they always remember to keep their claws clean. Yes, the instinct to rebel is still there, but their desire for bits of minty jadevine or plantain is stronger.

(Cumberland's story is unfortunately somewhat short, as the dragons of the circus have entirely no clue where they came from, who their parents are, or how a child from Light made it across the realms and into the Millmeadows.)

One busy afternoon in the Dusklight Circus, on the last day they were scheduled to stay in the Millmeadows, dragons were laughing and swarming in crowds of dozens. Diamond had just stepped out of his performance tent to grab lunch when he saw a bright purple and green flash dart out from under the horde of dragons. It was a scrawny-looking baby Aberration, with an exhausted Death Seeker clinging onto its back fluff. The hatchling looked up and barked—no, loudly cawed—, at Diamond. Confused and seeing no parents in sight, Diamond made the announcement that he had found an unattended baby Aberration and that their parents should come retrieve them. But as dusk fell and the circus began to close, no one came. Diamond watched as the last dragon left the main entrance, then looked down to see the child gently gripping his paw and smiling.

Later that night, when everyone agreed they should keep the hatchling until they found their parents, the group of performers noticed the child had quite a few cuts and bruises. Both they and their familiar were clearly underweight and worn out, and it made the circus question what had happened to this poor baby. The next day, just before the sun came up, half of the circus went out across Wind's realm to ask around, while the other half stayed and packed. The circus stayed in Wind three whole days longer than intended, putting up hastily drawn posters and going door to door—anything to try and find the child's parents, to no avail. Soon, though, it was time to leave for the next realm, and the circus had to make a choice. They had all grown attached to the little bundle of happiness and couldn't bear the thought of leaving them in an orphanage. So, with tents and supplies wrapped up and tied securely, the circus took off into the sky—with one new little crewmate.

[notes]

»In the first few days of being with them, Diamond noticed that cucumber and plantains were among the hatchling's favorite foods. Jokester Vixen noticed this also, and in a brief moment of intelligence, she suggested they name them "Cumberland! Like cucumber! Get it?!".

»When Pepperidge first joined the circus, a few years after Cumberland did, Cumberland tried relentlessly to become her friend. It took a lot of persistence and faith on Cumberland's part, but eventually the two became friends. Best friends, in fact. If you're looking for either of the children, there's a 95% chance you'll find them together. They often gift each other bits of food and flower bracelets.
