> fought the emperor who rose before Luminax after failing to find his charge. was hoping he'd die instead of having to live with the disgrace but alas, he's still here. got some great war stories though
> can be a little bit bitter that Luminax isn't a rallying point this time after how everything turned out with the last emperor. feels like it disrespects some of his fallen friends (and what are they naming emperors for? ridiculous. it's not a pet)
> was hired (sorta) by the owner of the mansion to keep the grounds safe and deter trespassers. it's an easy enough gig and it keeps retirement from being boring
> plus he had the benefit of meeting his charge here. an unlikely coincidence that seemed too much like the universe apologising for being unkind in the past for him to just ignore it
> except for Linsang, by the arcanist that guy just had to show up and ruin everything. he's just so... irritating. with his endless trinkets and amusing adventures in strange places. he never had to fight an emperor. takes his safety for granted. ungrateful wretch...

ORIGIN / He was called to fight against the last Emperor and started out a simple infantry soldier, new to the sword and combat. But he proved himself a leader, a tactician, a brilliant defender and rose to become a general. Banteng spent so long in the military that his life before is hazy at best and painful on bad days; it's best left alone. While he's technically retired now, his merit earned him his role as guard of the castle.

Fact / Although he doesn't speak of it, before he joined the military he belonged to an academic clan so his education is probably better than most. He even knows how to play the lute. Not that he'll ever demonstrate that.

Likes / Fishing. Long walks. Curling up by a fire for a lengthy nap. He has conflicting feelings about Blightbug. Loves the castle. It's old, it's stood here for centuries, defied the test of time and conflict and whatever else. It reminds him that he, too, can persist. Maybe he still has value.

Dislikes / Linsang. Imperials (most of them anyway). Fireworks.

Charge / Blightbug. Now, about those conflicting feelings: on the one claw, Blightbug is his Charge and he went into the war without one, never expecting to find it. For that, he's grateful. On the other claw, Linsang is here and he can't stand that... that... ugh, that merchant. That Blightbug is Charge of them both just rankles.

Interests / Puzzles and games of skill like check and chess and that kind of thing. He's known to wing his way to the Reliquary when Linsang is especially getting on his nerves just to play games with Helix or bandy words with Winter. It always surprises folks that a grizzled veteran like himself is in any way intelligent and he delights in that reveal. Plus, there are other dragons in the Reliquary he gets along with. Dragons that aren't Linsang. It's wonderful.
