he could not make up any figures in the dark.

when inky splotches of black swallowed him slowly
the faint roar of the distant battle faded away
gentle feathers fell on him as he descended
almost soothing was the sensation of death

alas, one’s breath is not eternal
they too shall fade away like the stars at dawn
in the belly of midnight he will lurk
withered petals drift onto concrete, turning to ashes

a raven swoops down from the sky
its raspy call echoes in the darkness
leaves scatter, babies shift, curtains billow
the fateful harbinger of death crows itself hoarse

they could not make up his figure in the dark
he creeps up on them so slowly, a lumbering doom
the petals stir faster the gusts pick up their breath quickens
they turn - vengeful eyes - squawks drown out the panic

their screams were the knell of an axe’s chain.
