Story of how Gargoyles came to be.
After being rediscovered, most if not all Obelisks were able to roam the valleys and lands freely with nothing to stop them. However very few were not granted this freedom. For some reason most of those taken were kept by a strong evil force, and as such the fate of the Obelisks have been tied to the fate of this mysterious being. It is known that those who have pledged their loyalty to this entity in exchange of protection have lived freely; however there was catch that wasn’t spoken of.
These Obelisks could only move freely within the darkness of night and the moment sun rays rose above them, they would automatically turn back to solid stone. They must be kept in darkness and could not be left in direct sunlight, although they could be in indirect sunlight, such as the light of a candle.
During this time the entity wanted to have fun. It was capable of finding several Obelisks in the sunlight, so, this entity created an army of Light dragons to use their abilities and render these Obelisks hopeless to ever move again. For many many moons they were complete stone, not aging while in this state.
The Light dragon army was triumphant, up until several decades later when the entity was ambushed and wounded in its sleep by armies lead by; Nature, Fire, and Arcane representatives.
When the entity was wounded, the Light army immediately fled leaving the now moss covered statues of the unlucky Obelisks. The Fire representative immediately began to burn and chains or dead roots that had also imbedded the statues in place. Arcane and Nature both started to figure out how they can help return these Obelisks to their original forms or if they were forever lost..
The Fire representative took the liberty of using the remaining chains to bind the wounded deity within a circle of fire.
Once Fire bounded the entity, it joined Nature and Arcane by the statues. After several hours of no luck, the three representatives gave up and decided to set up camp at their location because nightfall was coming.
Nightfall came and went and the still bound entity began to scream in pain, begging for someone to help it.
"Enough!" Came a quiet voice.
The three whipped their heads to the sound of the voice only to see the statues were slowly coming back to life. Because of how long it had been that they were frozen, the color and patterns these Obelisks once had were no more. Their body's had taken on a rough stone texture. The only color they held was that of the moss that covered them or that had stained them.
The Fire dragon representative let out a rumbling growl, ready to attack. The other two looked to the living statue in utter shock.
"How did you..."
"Magic." Came the answer.
"You can talk!" Came the surprise revelation.
"Of course I can speak. Just because it has been several decades doesn’t mean I cannot speak.”
After many hours into the night of speaking of this curse, more and more of these Obelisks got move around like they once did. Though conversation the Nature representative suggested that these Obelisks become guardians or in other words Gargoyles watching over abandoned towns and places.
Though this idea was quickly shot down by the Fire and Arcane representatives. Gargoyles were more than pleased with this idea. After being alone and trapped for so long, they were happy to be accepted again.
Arcane was studying one of the Gargoyles and sighed causing all the attention to go to this representative.
"What's wrong?" Came the question.
"It's nothing. Forget it."
"No. I think you have something you want to tell us."
"Nothing."
"Tell us!"
"I cannot remove the curse or spell that entity has placed onto all of you. It is much to dark for your understanding and capability of removing it.." Arcane was now shaking their head.
"That's what you have to tell us?"
"Yes."
"Well, as long as we can move during the night we don’t mind this curse.”
The representatives all nodded to this and agreed to help these Gargoyles find their new homes. When the sun is out, the representatives with help move the gargoyles stoned form by foot. During the night they will fly with the Gargoyles until they all have found a place to call home.
