Biography
_
Rorschach caws twice and Adara sets the cursed vase back on it's shelf, the duster beside it. She never gets far into the back corner of her shop. Every time she starts trying to dust, someone turns up - she half thinks one of the items there is cursed to cause interruptions, but she hasn't ascertained which just yet. "Let them in, Ta-miu!" she calls and hears the unmistakable jingle of her cat's collar, followed by the swoosh of a leap and the creak of the door. After a moment she hears the steady creak of the floorboards - a larger dragon then, and her hand falls to the axe at her belt. Under her hand, it grumbles and she gently scratches it's eye-ridge, willing it to soothe. It's been known to leap out of it's belt-loop on it's own accord if especially unsettled and she'd rather not chase off one of her few customers without a chance to first assess them. The crimson wildclaw waits by the shop's main desk. It's noises well-muffled by cloth, something squirms in her arms. "Adara Cursekeeper?" the wildclaw asks. At her nod, the wildclaw sighs in relief. "Thank the eleven. My grandmother left me this, when she became exalted." The bundle is passed unceremoniously to her, half-slid across the glass countertop. Some of the smaller mimics within leer up at her - there's a reason they're in the case and not freely stationed on the shelves - and with a whistle some of her birds come down to pull the cloth of the bundle back. Feebly flapping against it's bonds is a six-winged, deep-blue book. "Ah," she says. "Poor thing." Deftly, she undoes the twine - ignoring the wildclaw's scoff and mutter of poor it almost took my eye out - and strokes a hand down it's spine, over it's splayed wings. It's laced with less a curse and more of a gone-wild animating enchantment and when it calms she nods. "I can take it," she says. "If you no longer want it. Three pouches or three gems?" "Only three?" the wildclaw asks, clearly disappointed. "You want it gone," she points out. "And it's hardly something everyone is going to want. Three." The wildclaw makes a grumbling noise but assents, three gems are fished out of the maw of Adara's favourite Jawlocker mimic, and the wildclaw leaves. "Now," she says to the tome. "I've already got one of your kin, so you likely shan't be staying with me, but let's see if we can't find you a nice place to stay in the meantime, hm?" |
Rorschach caws twice and Adara sets down her eyeglass and the cursed necklace she'd been examining. She has a good array of things, these days, a mix of mimics and dark magic tomes and genuinely dangerous cursed things alongside those potentially useful - but some things are so cursed she honestly thinks they'd be better off stripped of magic or destroyed or otherwise rendered harmless. The ruby of the pendant glints between the talons that hold it in place and she sighs. On her lap Ta-miu stretches and yawns and blinks up at her. When she mews curiously Adara nods. "Let them in, won't you?" There's no noise of footsteps even when she hears the door clink shut, but rather a steady whisper of wings that says her new visitor is either a fae or a spiral. As they round the corner her eyes narrow beneath her mask: she knows this one. "The last time you came by," she says to the fae. "You bought a candelabra you proceeded to use to start sixteen fires. Dragons died because of you. I don't know how you tricked so many into vouching for you-" "I am not here to buy," the fae says smoothly. "But to sell." In his arms is the same candelabra he'd bought before. "I'm quite willing to give it up for free." For a long stretch they simply watch one another, too wary to so much as blink. Adara stretches a foot out to where her pearl sits in a basket on the floor - she'd taken pains to remember this dragon's face and magic and manner and she doesn't want to risk him damaging her pearl to erase that knowledge. "Let me examine it first," she says, her eyes still narrowed and sweeping the pendant off her counter and into the waiting maw of one of her chests. It pulls a face at the dark magic of it, but keeps it down. Gently she scratches it with one foot as she gestures for the candelabra to be set down. The magic, at least, is largely the same - more muted, if anything, rather than fed or twisted. Under her hands the living metal seems almost to purr. "Poor thing," she ends up saying. "You're a trickster at heart, not a murderer, aren't you? You never wanted to become this." The fae inclines his head as she looks up. "I leave it in your capable hands," he says, and flutters his way to the door. |

Rorschach caws twice and Adara stops trying to polish the disconcertingly fleshly grimplate she'd been given the day before. By all accounts it had eaten it's last owner - a rather terrible individual no one particularly grieved - and while she's had a lot of practice dealing with such things it still unnerves her to feel the echo of a living dragon's skin on something ostensibly dead, or at least unalive. "Tell them to wait, Corax, Corvus, Ravenna. I'll be just a moment!" She hears, even this far from the front, her birds echo her words in creaky, croaked voices, each word clear nonetheless. She hears too when they squawk in dismay and call for her. When she doesn't arrive in the requisite three seconds, she hears Ravenna flutter over. "Adara." The bird is very exact about getting her attention. "Customer. Wants to buuy." She raises an eyebrow and Ravenna coughs a laugh. "Wants to taalk. To you. Wants heelp." She finishes tidying up the polish and cloth and casts a spell to hover clear words of warning in front of the grimplate and goes to the door. It's simple enough to wave away the stinging charms she has set around the doorknob to discourage unruly visitors and to open the door. An amber coloured coatl waits for her, twisting their hands. "You want help?" she says, tilting her head and gesturing them inside. They nod and she moves behind the counter to hop up onto her stool. "I feel terribly alone," the coatl says, twisting their hands in front of them, their feathery crest dipping up and down. "I don't know if it's a curse or-" "You can try to cleanse a curse away," Adara interrupts gently. "If you've tried and it's not worked then either the curse is too strong or it's not magic." "I can't stand it," the coatl says. "Please- I just- I can't stand feeling so alone. I used to have siblings around, or friends, but I don't have anyone anymore, not since Luminax-" They cut themselves off. Adara smiles softly. "I think I might have something to help." She turns to the wall behind her, hung with paintings and mirrors and sets of enchanted arms. "Now," she tells them, hands on hips. "I know you've all been keeping an eye on things. I know you all want new homes and I know most of you would be rather good for this one. But we all know there's one in this shop who'd do it better. For the love of the Arcanist, tell me you've identified which-" "But we want homes," whines the pink-rimmed mirror. "We've waited for so long," grumbles one set of arms. "It's the fifth painting," says one of the painted fauns. "Along the back shelf. Like me, but dark brown instead of pale, pink horns instead of blue. I can hop out of paintings, she hops between them. It's how she gets people to visit." The others all turn into a chorus of complaining until Rorschach caws them all to silence. "Thank you, Caela," Adara says. "I'll see about homing you next, hm? Does your friend have a name?" Caela glances nervously at the others, shyly at Adara. "Her frame says Bambina," she says. "But I think she prefers to go by Fuchsia." Carefully, she leads the coatl towards the back of the shop, where paintings don't hang on the walls but sit propped up on shelves in between a variety of artefacts. Carefully, she sets a malign vial beside a banshee brooch the clink so gentle so as not to set the latter off and pulls down the painting. "Fuchsia?" she calls gently. The painting doesn't stir. "I know you're in there, Caela told me about you. I've got a home for you, with any luck." She gestures the coatl to step forwards, to peer worriedly at the canvas, and all at once the deathly still portrait comes alive with life and concern. "Oh," Fuchsia says. "No, this won't do, you look so lonely. Let me come home with you, I'll help you make friends." As Adara watches, tears bead at the coatl's eyes. One falls with a sudden splat to the floor. "Yes," the coatl says. "Yes, please." "She's three gems," Adara says gently. "Or three pouches, if you prefer to pay in gold. And she's yours as long as she's happy with you." The tears that fall next, as the coatl fishes treasure from their pockets and takes Fuchsia in their own two hands, are nothing else but of joy.
