Leaves fall in a flurry of red and yellow. The fish burble and the pond ripples like the arcs of ink his brush leaves behind. Stroke by stroke, mountains materialise in sweeping peaks of black and white. And in the middle of it all, a maned dragon sits in silence, quietly working his craft. A petal from his horns flutters down, and he calmly brushes it away, leaving an artful streak on his scroll.

A pale pink kitsune winds past the Veilspun’s hind legs, and another follows, ducking under patterned wings and silky mane. They blink inquisitively, clambering up the dragon for a better view of his artwork, before wandering away to chase the falling leaves. He pays them no heed, for they do not mean harm, and have elected not to disturb his work.

Birdsong echoes in the half-bare trees as a flock passes by. As his mate approaches, a feather from the flock drifts down, and the water blooms like a fleeting flower. He looks up, smiles, and looks down again. The mountains rise tall and proud, and dashes of ink wind their way across the paper as a flowing river.

He stands. His work for the day has been completed, and so has the day itself. The pair’s silhouettes cast a serene shadow in the setting sun.
