XIE LIAN♫
谢 xiè – to thank 怜 lián – from pity (可怜) or mercy (怜悯) { "Body in abyss, heart in paradise." } Thrice-ascended martial god Xie Lian might have long left behind his days as the naive crown prince of Xian Le, but he still displays unmatched grace and strength in both body and heart. Once, he had grand, foolish dreams of saving every downtrodden commoner, and set his sights upon becoming a god to protect them. He achieved this feat at seventeen years old, with a sword in one hand for might and a flower in the other for mercy. But kingdoms fall and no perfect path exists, and for a time Xie Lian languished in helplessness, fear, loneliness, and the loss of everything he tried to hold close. He came to know betrayal and bitterness and hatred, and nearly unleashed unthinkable violence on both guilty and innocent alike before a single act of kindness restored his faith in the worth of humanity. He readily accepted responsibility for his mistakes, and spent many years in the mortal realm atoning in his own humble way, until the heavenly realm scoffed at his fate and the world had all but forgotten his name. His eight hundred year lifespan has tempered his brashness, and his experiences with despair and failure have formed him into an unfailingly compassionate man. He cares little for rumor or public perception; after all, he knows better than most that a person's merit has very little to do with words, and everything to do with their actions. He is always inclined to pass on a good turn even to those who have wronged him, but is also willing to- and very capable of- defending the people and ideals he holds dear. While he can come off as rather strange, he is extremely observant and levelheaded in crisis; whether he chooses to act on that knowledge or merely let things happen as they will is another matter. Now he spends his days wandering the mortal realm with his husband, passing the centuries in unexpected, but joyful, simple happiness.
