HELLWEEPER Mercenary |
Friendly? Happy? Kind? Three words that will never be used to describe Hellweeper. A cold and cruel Banescale, Weeper doesn’t get along with any dragon except her business partner, Bloodrunner. While she may not be the brightest bulb in Sornieth, she makes up for it in sheer audacity and willpower. The consequences of this “would fight Arcanist for half a bagel” attitude caught up with her when an anonymous employer approached her and Blood with a secret mission, which Weeper agreed wholeheartedly to. This unapproved mission ended in the duo incurring the ire of both their former guild and the entirety of the Water Flight. They spent the next several years bouncing from place to place around Sornieth, avoiding their fellow mercenaries who were now sent to hunt them. Eventually they disappeared in the Star Wood Strand and encountered the Perditus Clan. Bloodrunner chose to stay with the motley crew, and rather than continue wandering alone Weeper remained as well. She has since learned her lesson about both not taking unapproved hits and not challenging a deity with only one dragon as back up. Weeper and Blood have yet to discover who called that fateful hit, but once they do the employer will regret it. |

As the shimmering leaves and silver branches closed over their heads, Hellweeper felt herself start to relax. The mercenaries that had been chasing them probably wouldn’t follow them into the Starwood Strand; the trees were too thick. Not to mention all of the rumors of dragons going missing in these woods. The bounty on their heads couldn’t be high enough to risk getting lost.
She pointedly didn’t consider how they would avoid the same fate.
She and Bloodrunner ran a bit longer, just in case, before settling against the trunk of a particularly massive tree to catch their breath.
“I think we lost them,” Hellweeper eventually announced, shaking her head and chuckling. “Idiots.”
Normally this was the point where she and Bloodrunner would relax and make fun of how incompetent their pursuers had been, but to her surprise Bloodrunner didn’t join in on the laughter. When Hellweeper looked over, she found Bloodrunner staring intently at the ground, a strange expression on her face.
“Runner?” Hellweeper prompted.
Bloodrunner turned towards her. “I’m tired, Weeper,” Bloodrunner said.
Hellweeper blinked, confused. “Well, like I said, I think we lost them. We can rest here a bit longer if you need.”
“No, Weeper, I’m tired,” Bloodrunner repeated, shaking her head in frustration. “Of this! Of always being on the run, of constantly looking over our shoulders, never truly resting. Aren’t you getting sick of it too?”
Hellweeper flinched as Bloodrunner struck a chord. But rather than admit it, she bristled defensively and scoffed, turning away from her partner. “No. I could keep running circles around these idiots all day, they’re no threat. I’m fine.”
“Well I’m not,” Bloodrunner said flatly. Her confession came out so harshly that Hellweeper immediately looked back at her in surprise. “Like I said, I’m tired of it all.”
“Well, what the heck do you want to do about it? Ask the next band of mercenaries trying to kill us to pretty please stop because we’re sleepy?”
Bloodrunner glared at her for a moment, before her shoulders slumped in defeat. “I don’t know what to do,” she admitted.
Hellweeper wilted a bit too, the teeniest bit of guilt growing in her gut. “...You’ll think of something,” she muttered. “You always do.”
Bloodrunner only shook her head.
