His long whiskers twitched. It was still dark in his den, the glowbug he kept for light resting in its cage. It was not long for dawn. The horizon lightened purple, soon to be overtaken with pink, yellow, orange, blue. Presently he stood and stretched, wondering what had awakened him so early. Not even the crickets chirped, and the songbirds still slept in preparation for their rousing chorus. No senses, neither sound, sight, touch, smell, nor taste gathered anything outside the ordinary. He spun in his den - not to lay down once more, but rather in anxious pursuit of something. The calm that had blanketed him was exceptionally eerie. Definitely unnatural.

His whiskers tingled and he took to spinning once more, though he was promptly halted by a deep shadow pressed into the furthest corner of the room. It seemed to sway as if it were a flame set before an open window, buffeted by the lightest breeze that would not even dare billow a curtain. Though it lacked any discerning features - and most certainly not any indication of eyes - it nevertheless seemed to be staring into him. A chill washed down his back and he could not resist a shiver.

The form seemed to grow closer, yet every time he blinked, it was just as far as it had been, perhaps even farther. His ears felt stuffed with cotton and his own heartbeat filled him with lead. He felt so heavy, yet his legs continued to support him.

Now his head filled with thoughts seemingly foreign to himself, but recounted in his own voice. His understanding was that this was not a wraith, but rather a projection. It was not hostile despite its frightening presentation. In his mind it conveyed a feeling. A need, a drive, an urge. He felt it tugging at his hide, and desire filled him. He was tasked with a mission of sorts.

Like it had intercepted his thoughts before they had the chance to form, it assured him that they could communicate more the following night, and any and every night following. His remaining question was not one of what but of how.

The form stood as unmoving as before, and his mind once again quieted. It stared into him, and he stared back.

I understand.
A banging at his den's door awoke him. Sunlight streamed in through his windows, immediately making his eyes hurt. His den looked the same as it had the day before. His glowbug sipped at its nectar bowl. He groaned loudly.

"Wake up! It's going to be too hot if we don't leave soon!"

"Fine, I'm awake." He rolled over and faced the door as it swung open. Odłamek stood in the doorway, beaming wide. He held a large picnic basket in one paw and a bottle of berry wine in the other.

Seivor hauled himself to his feet and stretched. He could hear the songbirds singing and smell the fresh bread in Odłamek's basket. His partner leaned in and pecked Seivor on the nose.

"Come along, then." He beckoned with the wine bottle. Seivor smiled and stepped through the doorway. As he did, he turned around. His room was still in order. Light poured into every corner.

He could feel the impulse at the back of his mind.
