Biography
L U N A R I A B L O O D - M A G E wary | reclusive | soft-spoken |
”I’ve seen enough. If you know what’s good for us both, you’ll leave me be.” Lunaria was born into an extremely warlike clan, in a time where inter-flight conflicts ran high and boiled over. While powerful, her parents’ clan was driven out of their territory in the Expanse by a much older and larger clan, and they sought refuge in Earth territory. However, before they could recuperate, Lunaria's siblings were snatched while she was practicing her magic. Still young and exhausted from the journey, and extremely vulnerable, they were easy prey for hostile snatchers roaming the Shattered Plain. Outraged, Lunaria's parents immediately subjected her to intense training for self-defense. The Pearlcatcher's state of mind and her impressionable age led to a taking with blood magic, and she became fiercely independent and reclusive. She was trained using the blood of captives from other flights, which rubbed her the wrong way from the start, but to a hatchling it only felt like something necessary for survival. When she was not subjected to training far harsher than any hatchling should suffer, Lunaria read. She and her father were the only Pearlcatchers in her clan, and she wished to read more about what others of her species were like—especially considering her instinct to add to a pearl, which to a young Lunaria, seemed to run contrary to the clan’s policies of utilitarianism and efficiency in battle. It was then that she found herself taken with the magical qualities of her own pearl—how the intense beliefs in the pearls’ ability to capture souls lent them magical properties. Intrigued, she became enthralled by the possibility of a novel form of blood magic: pearl magic. This, combined with her desire to prove herself useful (a Pearlcatcher in a clan of naturally-armored dragons like Ridgebacks was seen as weak, after all, and weak dragons were discarded), led her straight to her diabolical clan leader. When she explained her interests and findings, the leader was ecstatic at the discovery of potentially capturing and harnessing souls, and commanded that Lunaria be enchanted so she never stopped producing the fluid. With her talent, he was positive she would need the fluid to trap every soul she encountered. |

The Pearlcatcher was sent abroad, tasked with seeking out dragons ancient and powerful—those who could be captured and harnessed, used as guards and warriors to serve her clan’s leader as he expanded their reign within the Earthshaker’s realm. She was reluctant, but her parents nudged her out. She was smart enough and dangerous enough to survive on her own, and they were growing more and more worried that the leader would have her killed if she stayed. So, at their request…Lunaria went traveling, driven by her grisly mission, her jaws dripping with fluid until her teeth crusted over with pearlescent plaque. She sought the powerful; the fewer souls she stole, the better, but she still had a duty to fulfill lest what was left of her family be taken out. After years of traveling and battling, she’d successfully captured and contained five souls, each threatening and powerful in their own ways, when she encountered her father while roaming Arcane territories. Weary and battle-scarred, the old Pearlcatcher told her that the clan had disbanded, their greedy and narcissistic leader slain by a band of rebels from within the clan. She cared for him until he passed, and now without a mission, she decided to rest in Arcane territory. There, she was welcomed into a clan of scholars that she stayed with for a few years, slowly adapting to peaceful clan life, even with her constant paranoia. Eventually, the constant buzzing and static of the Arcane energy swarming the land began to bother her and interrupt her non-Arcane practices, and Lunaria departed from her rescuers amicably. She decided to strike out for Shadow territory, where she found a clan and nested with a few inhabitants, but found that Shadow's magic was inherently more fickle and illusory than her own specialty. And thus, Water drew her in--the Sea was rumored to bring out the most of a dragon's magical potential, but was also quiet. And thus, she wound up in Freida's clan. She is the eldest dragon in the clan and mostly keeps to herself, but occasionally serves as an advisor or mentor. She still practices blood magic and has honed her craft to the point of being extremely dangerous, but is reproachful enough toward conflict that Freida does not worry. |
