Beneath the Ancient Sanctum is a cave filled with myriad crystal formations. This place, once sacred to the Force but forgotten long ago, is now protected by Chirrut and his partner Baze. They are the last remaining Guardians of the Whills: an order dedicated to following the will of the Force.

Crystals from the cave are traditionally used by Jedi to craft runestones for their iconic weapons. By meditating in the cave, each individual finds themself drawn to a particular crystal growth. Carving their signature Rune into a small piece of this resonant crystal imbues it with the power of the Force and, when fitted into the hilt of a sword, this magic flows through the blade. The resulting glow and ability to combat the Shade gives Jedi weapons their iconic name: lightsabres.

Similarly, Guardians of the Whills are required to personally craft a weapon as part of their physical training, though in their case it is a lightbow. The cave’s crystals are again used in this process. As the Guardians do not have the same connection to the Force as the Jedi, their carved crystals are less powerful against the Shade and Shade-touched, but nonetheless the runestones pack a hefty punch against more typical opponents.

Though Chirrut is blind, he is a formidable warrior. He claims that the Force guides him in battle, as it does in all things. Brave and often reckless, he has an uncanny knack for finding trouble, but fortunately is equally adept at getting himself out of it - sometimes with a little assistance from Baze.

In such instances, he often says, “The Force protected me.”

To which Baze always replies, “I protected you!”

For Chirrut, these two may as well be the same thing.

Prior to the events that led to the destruction of the Death Star airship, Chirrut was part of a rag-tag band of dragons who attempted to retrieve information from the heart of Shade territory. Their heroic efforts were successful and played a key role in destorying the dreaded Shade-touched Emperor, but they barely escaped with their lives. Now inseparable, all the dragons in Rogue One consider one another to be family, with Chirrut and Baze taking a distinctly parental attitude towards Bodhi, Jyn and Cassian.

These days, the need to fight has thankfully diminished. Chirrut spends his days in meditation and quiet practice within the crystal caves, or lounging with Baze in their quarters and near the Ancient Sanctum. The pair are still fiercely devoted to protecting the cave and the pilgrims who visit it, but without the threat of the Shade hanging over their heads can afford to enjoy a quieter life together.

Nonetheless, and despite Baze's protests, Chirrut enjoys sparring. His favourite opponents are those who trust in his abilities and pull no punches because of his disability.

He also enjoys long conversations about the Force with Skywalker, and has helped the younger dragon to come to terms with finding balance between his duties as the last Jedi and his needs as an individual.
