They had him. He had fought and fought, but they just wouldn't die. How were they not dead? Any other dragon would be dead after what he had done in his desperate attempts to escape. Yet they dragged him between them, taking him to who knows where.
His surroundings were too dark to see his captors, to see where they were headed, to see anything. And yet it felt far too familiar, somehow. If he could just place it, maybe then...
"Throw him in," one of his captors said. The lilt of their voice reminded him of someone who had once promised they loved him, but it was too distorted by the pounding in his head to be sure of their identity.
"Your wish is my command, love."
Before he had time to register what the second speaker had said, he was falling. He tried to fly, but his wings were wrong. No, not wrong. Just different. They'd been right once upon a time. They should have remained right, but that had been taken from him.
It was still being taken from him. He remembered now. He knew what this place was for. The queens, they-
"Your majesty? Are you quite alright?"
Aldrich woke with a start.
Standing in the entrance of his room was Roarke, the advisor to the throne. His usual aged wrinkles were joined by those of a concerned gaze.
"I- yes, Roarke. Just that, uh, that old recurring nightmare. It's nothing. You can leave."
He didn't move from the doorway.
Aldrich sighed. As much as he cared for Roarke, the old dragon could be far too stubborn at times.
"Go back to sleep, Roarke."
When he still made no sign of moving, Aldrich added, "That's an order."
It didn't feel right to exercise his royal power over others, especially Roarke, who was the closest thing he had to a father, but Aldrich didn't have the energy to deal with his concern tonight. He hadn't had the energy to deal with it in a long time.
With heavy reluctance, Roarke turned to leave.
"I just worry for you, sir," he said under his breath as he walked away for the hundredth time. "Sometimes it's better not to know."
