"GUIDE THEM AWAY FROM THE DANGER WITHIN. GUIDE THEM TO SAFETY, HIDE THEM, OR YOU WILL ALL BE TAKEN.

That was his Father's charge. That was his parting word before vanishing and leaving his newest children to puzzle over it. He had heard the command. All of his siblings, his brothers and sisters, had heard it. What could it mean? Danger within? Guide them where? How?

And then the stone shattered.

The first thing he noticed as he shook the dust and rock from his body was his tail. It was bright and fluffy, in such contrast to the bare, cheerless rock that surrounded him. He bounced around like a hainu infatuated with its wings, ever chasing the cloud of pink fur attached to his tail. He paid no mind to Mirth, the foremost of the Obelisks, to his emerging siblings, or the crowd of strange creatures that were supposedly kin. "Kin." What a funny word!

You see, he was a wind dragon. Fighting unseen enemies, committing memories to stone, and searching out mysteries of the deities meant nothing to him. He wanted to explore. He wanted to find his place in this new world. His first day in the world called Sorienth was full of excitable outbursts of curiosity at everything from a Guardian dragon to a balsas anole. His kin found him... annoying? High-strung? Far too similar to the long spindly one that the Earthshaker - their creator - had battled so long ago? Yes. The worst of it came when he heard a nocturne whistling. He observed this acoustic phenomenon with wide-eyed wonderment, and insisted on being taught how to replicate it. He came home that day whistling like a merry breeze. Whistling! This was no time to whistle! The world was in danger!

He was meant to be called Peridot, for his bright green scales. But that was a far too stately name for a creature of his type. So they called him "The Whistler", a moniker he soon adopted for himself. Peridot was supposed to be a fierce warrior, a guide and protector of dragonkind against this new threat. Whistler was a bright and curious hatchling who wanted to see the world. So they sent him to a peaceful clan, a society of scholars and philosophers who rarely saw combat: The Dayfire Clan.

____How can a carefree, music-loving explorer be turned into a warrior? By the schooling of Zanjeer. The banescale general was as annoyed by the cheerful Obelisk as his siblings had been, and initially considered him useless. Untrainable. But through the advice of Ajadzia, who understood Whistler's interests and curiosity, Zanjeer assigned to Whistler a tutor: Lasheen, a deadly harpy defector who had pledged her loyalty to the dragons of the Sunbeam Ruins (they hoped).

____Over time, through many excursions and differences, the harpy and the young Obelisk found that they were not as dissimilar as they thought. They bonded over their mutual love for music and art, and their desire to travel the land without fear of attack. They lamented that these things were forced to take second importance in their war-torn world. Perhaps one day they would be able to follow their dreams, apart from combat.

____Whistler would grow in stature as well as might in the next years in Sorienth. Despite his curious and fun-loving nature, he has found the path to soldier-hood and has followed it faithfully. In keeping with her customs, Lasheen fashioned for him a colorful battle mask, which had to be tailored specifically to match his mane and face, which were not harpy-like at all.

____And though he is a warrior by name, Whistler has never lost his love for music, and of course, for whistling. The emergence of the Obelisk kind he has memorialized in a ballad, which his friend and teacher helped him author. Each day, the parting warning of his father, the Earthshaker, is close by (Lasheen forces him to recite it every morning). It guides his actions, feeds his will to learn battle and prepare for the day when the new danger is finally unearthed. For all his flaws he is fearless, and the leaders of the Dayfire clan have faith that he will be ready when the time comes. And when it does, Whistler will meet the challenge with a bold spirit, whistling a cheerful tune.
