Biography

"A gift for you, Your Majesty. From the Dustcarve Dig, handpicked by your most loyal servants."

Everything was... blurry. Like waking up from a long dream, yet... she wasn't quite awake. She felt stiff, yet bubbly inside. She could scarcely make out the shapes around her and their voices were barely audible and clear enough to discern words but those around her had to be dragons. Other dragons, she was sure of it and she was just so excited.

"A statue of... what is this? A misshapen tundra? This is the best they had for what we gave them?"

Emotion. She could feel it. One of the dragons was feeling some sort of strong emotion. She wasn't quite sure what one it was, she wasn't sure of most things actually, but she was excited to learn. She hoped they were feeling happiness. Intense joy. That's what she was feeling after all, though she wished she could at least move.

"These were what the archeologists were looking for, that's all we know. We were told that the Earthshaker left these there."

The Earthshaker! Now she was really excited, though not to say that she wasn't excited before. She wondered where she was and who was around her, all she could make out were what seemed like white and silver walls, pillars maybe and what looked like something... purple, sitting on top of something else white in the back. It was big, perhaps elaborate. Oh, maybe it was a throne. She'd heard what she thought was someone saying something like "Your Majesty" earlier. Maybe that was a King. She felt giddy, she was in the presence of a king!

"From the Earthshaker himself then...? Hmmph... perhaps, it might be something worthy of my time."

The purple form shifted, standing now. It was approaching. She struggled to move. Not because she wanted to get away but because if that really was a king she wanted to show them the proper respect and bow. They drew closer and her vision seemed to clear. She started becoming more lucid. She heard... cracking, yes the cracking of stone. She hoped it wasn't what she assumed to be the palace. She hadn't laid eyes on the detail of it yet, but she didn't need to to know that it was elaborate and exquisite. She liked those words, but they didn't feel quite right. Right for what, she wasn't sure.

"What's...? Is this shoddy statue breaking apart?"
"No, Your Majesty, look! There's something... underneath..."

She felt herself moving, her vision clearing even more. She laid eyes on the dragons opposite to her. The others remained a blur in her mind as the details of the purple dragon became clearer. A Wildclaw... she wasn't sure what exactly that meant or was but she knew it was the correct word for the dragon opposite to her. He carried himself with dignity and poise, even with the surprised, irritated expression on his face. She didn't like that look but perhaps Kings had many things to be irritated about. He was adorned with such fine looking fabric and accented with white-colored roses. Atop his head wasn't an elaborate crown, but a tiara decorated with more roses. She stared, emotions rising in her, as she took in her surroundings too. Awe. That was what she was feeling. That was the right word. That was her name. Awe.
She lurched forward, no longer stiff and encased in stone like she had been. She caught herself with her front paws and looked up. The dragons, and the King especially, stared back. Her form was not quite like there's, not just because she was simply of a different breed. She didn't know how to describe it, but she knew how to fix it. Her larger, bulkier frame melted away into one more slender yet still fit, she was designed to be. Less beastial and more humanoid, a form better fit for the conveniences of this world. Her wings dissolved into magic and she found herself in a deep bow, kneeling before the King.

"... What... are you?"

She stood and smiled. The words she said next came naturally, as she was created knowing them, even if it took a little bit to fully comprehend.

"I'm an Obelisk, Your Majesty. A breed crafted by the Earthshaker himself with all his love. A gift to Sornieth."

The King stared with wild eyes and for a moment, she was worried she'd said something wrong.

"An Obelisk..."

The King looked her up and down, then smiled.

"Well, a gift, you say? For sure, your kind are to be a fine one. Pray tell me, why would your kind Father decide to do such a thing?"

She was taken aback by the question and furrowed her brow, thinking. Why did He? She was grateful either way, but there had to be a reason. After a moment, the realization struck her like an icicle to the heart, dampening her joy and enthusiasm with a strange coldness. She dipped her head.

"To protect Sornieth, Your Majesty. The Earthshaker has long since known that there are threats beneath Sornieth, where he dwells. He created us to help dragonkind against this threat."

She dropped to her knees in a deep bow, feeling a rush of desperation.

"Please, Your Highness, allow me to stay here! I want to help protect you and your subjects! It's why I was created. It's why I was allowed to be here."

The King was silent for a second, but she dare not look up at him lest he take offense. She was still new to the customs of other dragons so she was careful not to offend.

"Stand, Obelisk."

She did so, shivering quietly, afraid that he'd refuse her and she'd be cast away. She felt so many emotions in such a short time, it was wonderful yet she hoped that she wouldn't have to linger on this awful dread rising her chest. The King looked her up and down and smiled once more.

"As a King who cares deeply for the health and safety of his subjects, it'd be foolish for me to turn away a dragon not only gifted to us by a Deity but one knowledgeable on a threat we'd never even heard of. We'd be glad to have you... erm... forgive me but... what is your name?"

She opened her mouth to speak but her words caught in her throat. She trusted the King, truly she did, yet when she went to say her name, the name that felt so right for her, she couldn't. She had such a bad feeling that she should not tell him her true name. She wasn't sure why, but she simply could not let the word pass her teeth. So, she did something strange to her for the first time. She lied.

"I don't have one. I could decide on one, but, perhaps Your Majesty has one in mind?"

It felt stranger, lying. She thought it'd be hard, since it wasn't nice to lie. But it was easy. Too easy, and that scared her. She had no reason not to trust the King, or to distrust anyone really. But if lying was this easy... how was she sure that she wasn't being lied to either. She swallowed those feelings deep down where it sat in the pit of her stomach.

"Well if you don't have one... how about... Harbinger? As in, a Harbinger of peace and safety, for my kingdom? I think it fits quite nicely, since you've explained what you're here to do."

The words he spoke sounded weird to her ears. He has to be lying. About what she wasn't sure, she knew nothing of this place, not even it's name or where it was. Based on the chill, she had to guess that she was at least in the Southern Icefield. But the King... there was something nefarious behind his eyes. She ignored it, she had to. Whether or not he had his own plans wasn't her business. She had a task, she had to focus on that. She forced a smile.

"Harbinger, I like it. I promise you, Your Majesty, that I'll usher in peace and safety everlasting."

He chuckled, a stranger, cold laugh.

"I'll hold you to that, my Harbinger."

Their eyes met. And in that moment, they both knew that they were both lying.
