It is funny how such a critical business can be so overlooked, yet so popular. Once upon a time, it used to frustrate Saa how little thanks he and his brother Vey got for their work. They labored endlessly through long nights and longer days to clothe the dragons of Hulmoor. They were tailors of grand renown and impeccable skill, and yet they seemed to have so little. Their clientele was loyal, but small, and though every dragon they knew needed clothes in some fashion or another, the brothers were apparently not the source of choice. But that changed overnight, when Saa struck gold, quite literally. While his brother had been decorating everything indiscriminately with small garnet embellishments, Saa had fretted for ages over the right blend of subtle and stunning, never finding a proper combination, one that steered clear of gaudy without being invisible. Then, he tried the gold lace, and within a few short days, all of his samples were sold, and demand rose for more. He never imagined it would take something so simple, so fine, to bring the family business close to bursting, but lo and behold, he and Vey were forced to hire other dragons to help streamline production, and then they had to expand even further, opening a shop in all the way in Amsterwick, where the clientele only expanded further. Vey remained at the Hulmoor office in the end, insisting that Saa was the pioneer who ought to take his fashionable discovery to new lands. They argued about it, neither one wanting to be parted from the other, but eventually, they agreed that Saa would go to Amsterwick, and return regularly to help at the flagship shop during the busy seasons. It was the most agreeable solution, even if it did mean more travel in the end. Saa still misses Hulmoor often, since it was his home for so long, but with his new home being so busy, he almost doesn't have time to miss it. Besides, on his days off, he likes to visit Aliye the gatekeeper. She collects bones for whatever reason, and always has new treasures to share. Together, they've released a line of gold jewelry with the bones. Aliye always gets her pick of the bunch, and Saa sells the rest, neatly dividing the profits between the shop and Aliye. For such a morbid sort of item, gilded bone jewelry has taken off at unprecedented speeds, and it's absurdly easy to spot it on almost any resident of the city. The fad will pass some day, of course, and Saa will have to come up with something new to chase it with, but for now, his golden adornments are all the rage, and it makes him proud to see his family name all over Hulmoor and Amsterwick alike, celebrated after so much hard work. He and Vey have earned it. |
