Biography
The patron, a rather portly Mirror merchant, sat across from Alanii tapping his cane impatiently against the stone floor. The constant tap tap grew on Alanii’s nerves quickly and prevented them from properly decerning the stars. They simply could not work in conditions like this, how were they to read fate with overly rich wind bags pushing them to go faster.
There was a large part of Alanii that wished to tell the old merchant to kiss off, but there was a larger part of them that knew they needed the coin. “Do tell me, Astrologist, what does my future hold?” The Mirror spoke in disdain, as many of his status will to those they see as lessors, and the tone finally broke them.
Hrm? “The stars do look favorable, but what is that?” they said. The tapping stopped, a sideway glance showing them that the Mirror had sat forward against the table, full attention applied to Alanii. A small, sly grin curled one side of their mouth. They continued: “Oh dear, this is not good, not good at all.”
“What is it?!” the Mirror asked, almost ready to fall out of his seat at this point.
Alanii continued again: “It seems those around you, your workers, family, clan, they are growing disinterested in you and your business. Oh yes. Your tight purse strings has isolated you and now everyone will pull away. You’ll start losing money—
“No! What can I do, soothsayer? Quickly tell me.”
“I’m not sure you want to know—
“Anything! Just tell me how to prevent losing money.”
“According to the stars, you need to start donating your funds to those in need. Loosen those strings and bring attention back to you.”
“That’s it?”
“That’s it.” Alanii thought for sure the old merchant would have scoffed and stormed away, but that is not what happened. The Mirror rose from the table, plopped a sizable coin purse on it, and hi-tailed it from the shop. They watched, dumbfounded as said merchant stopped at a donation booth and offered them coin, before pushing on down the road.
There was a long time they just stood there, staring out their door, eyes so wide they started to dry. After a moment of letting sink in what happened and smile eased over his maw. “Hehe.”
