Mourning

The air has shed its dewy summer skin
and now it's just as dry and cold as it was
on the day we unstuck ourselves for good.
sore throats and cloud-breaths and nights
that creep in quick and quiet, they all tug me
back towards the times we spent crushing leaves
and leaving footprints in the frosted mud
of the forest, like boot-shaped calling cards
that we were there. we were there.
and I wish i could remember it better
and I wish I could forget it altogether.
the cold feels so much colder without you
here to conjure up some kindling. you and I
are only soot now, the charred remains
of a fallen star. And our candle, once blazing,
has become just a puddle of wax made from
the leftover legacy of Icarus' wings.
each day, without you, I return to this forest,
gathering out ashes in my sweater pockets.
and as I sift through our embers, I grieve
for the two dreamers who loved so hard
that they smothered the flames
they had worked so hard to ignite.
